'Most Original Of Fourth Graders Hoke Boy Wins N.C. Poster Contest ) Brian Allen of Raeford has been named winner of the Fourth Grade division of the State Bicycle Poster Contest in the Most Original poster class. Heart Run 'May 15 For the fourth consecutive year, Laurinburg will be the site of the Scotland Heart Run May 15. The Heart Run is a joint effort of the American Heart Association and Connecticut Mutual Life In surance Company. L The 10,000-meter run will begin ^and end on the campus of St. An drews Presbyterian College. Check points will be set up at each mile mark so that any person wishing to join the event may run as much or as little as he or she wants, up to 6.2 miles. A one-mile "fun run" is designed for beginners. Each runner is encouraged to seek out local supporters who will contribute to the Heart Associa tion based on the number of miles completed by each sponsored run- . ner. | The Scotland Heart Run is designed to involve runners of various ages and levels. Addi tionally, a blood-pressure clinic will be held for participants and 1 spectators alike at the site, before, during and after the event. In join ing with Connecticut Mutual Life, the American Heart Association |has associated its coveted "heart *and torch" logo nationally to a corporate name for the first time in its thirty year history. The run will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Andrews Administrative Building parking lot and will pro ceed through the campus and sur rounding area concluding at the same parking lot location. 'Walk I Scheduled r Over the weekend of May 1, people all over the country will demonstrate their concern for our future children by walking 10 miles in the March of Dimes k WalkAmerica. ? In Fayetteville WalkAmerica will take place on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. at Bordeaux Shopping Center. Anyone in the Raeford area interested in participating in the Fayetteville walk is advised to contact Tonny Connell at 875-5103. A bus will bb provided to .carry Raeford people to the W Fayetteville event. The bus will leave Raeford at 8 a.m. An estimated 2,000 walkers from the Fayetteville area will par ticipate in the biggest walk in the country. Following the highly suc cessful first Walk America last year, this year's WalkAmerica pro mises to be bigger and better. Although most of the walkers will come from the junior and ^senior high schools, teams of ^employees from Red Carpet Realtors, Zayres, Carolina Telephone & Telegraph, WKFT TV 40, and many more will par ticipate in the TeamWalk com ponent as well. Last week, more than 5,000 teams throughout the country walk ed. Birth Defects continue to be ^the nation's number one child "health problem. Money col lected from pledges will help support programs in birth defects research, medical ser vice and education. WalkAmerica contributions will go toward Public Health materials for schools, clinics and for the pur chase of Intensive Care equipment for our local hospitals. *Scout Supper Cub Pack 404 and Boy Scout Troop 404 will hold a barbecue and barbecued-chicken supper May 13 in Gibson Cafeteria 5-7:30 p.m. Tickets are being sold by Scouts. ? > He is the 9-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Allen and is a stu dent in Mrs. Darlene Clark's class of South Hoke School. His poster art carried the message "North Carolina Is For Bicycling." This followed the 1982 Bicycle Week theme, which had the same title. Brian advanced to the state finals by winning the Fourth Grade title in the .Most Original competi tion in the Hoke County contest, which was sponsored by the Hoke County Department of Parks and Recreation. He will receive his prize in Raleigh next week -- a bicycle donated by the Schwinn Bicycle Co., a Certificate of Merit, a bicy cle cap donated by Chain Bike Corp., and a Bicycle Bag donated by Sun Tour, Inc. The presentations will be made at 3 p.m. Friday by William R. Roberson, Jr., secretary of the State Department of Transporta tion, in the Highway Building Board Room. Students in Grades 4 through 6 in schools from mountains to coast and the Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia borders competed in their counties' poster contests. Pittman Grove Win 5 Pittman Grove Baptist Church's softball team opened its New South River Association season by defeating Walstone Baptist Church of Fayetteville, 18-11. Pittman Grove's next outing is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. at the Armory ballpark in Raeford against Lafayette Baptist Church of Fayetteville. The public is invited to come and support the Pittman Grove team to victory once again. There is no admission charge. The team's coaches are Larry Chason and Mack Musselwhite. Chason piayed last year. The players on this season's roster are Sandy Prevatte, Tony Boahn, Eddie Baker, Tommy Bishop, Terry Graves, Bobby Carter, Bobby Posey, Ray Davis, Billy Lightsinger, Mack Carter, Tony Clark, Bruce Swann, Tom my McColl and Raymond Shepley. Bishop, Prevatte, Graves, Bobby and Mack Carter, and McColl are new members. The others played for Pittman Grove last season.
