Area Incidents 3 Charged With Food Thefts The following were reported by Raeford Police Chief Leonard Wig gins. City Patrolman Jack Martino while on patrol saw a car drive away from The Pantry on East Central Avenue at high speed Thursday. He followed and stopped it near the House of Raeford plant. The result was two men and a woman arrested and charged with larceny of food from The Pantry and the A&P. and the driver charged also with driving under the influence. Wiggins said Martino was ac companied in the arrests by City Patrolman George Baker. He said the three, all of Fayette ville, were charged with larceny of $64.21 worth of meat and other foods from The Pantry, and S78.50 worth of meat from the A&P. He said the driver was David Lee McMillan. 946 Louise Circle. The others charged were Rufus Pear son, 232 Rosemary St.. and Geral dine Bates Huchens. 157 Telegraph Circle. Each was charged with larceny and with possession of stolen property. Other cases reported follow. Macks Stores reported a shoplift ing Saturday, and later the same day Kenneth Wayne Hamilton. Rt. Parnell Files For State Senate David Parnell has filed as a candidate for the Democratic nomination to the N.C. Senate representing Robeson and Hoke counties. Parnell, a Parkton businessman and farmer, is now serving in his fourth term in the N.C. House of Representatives. During the 1981 session of the General Assembly, he served as co-chairman of the Joint House and Senate Base Budget Committee on General Govern ment and was instrumental in making reductions in the Base Budgets of those departments of state government that were as signed to his committee in excess of 8 million dollars. As vice chairman of the House Appropriation Committee, he had an active roll in the passage of all Special Appropriation bills that were funded for Robeson and Hoke counties and was a member of the Appropriation sub-committee that made the final draft of the 1981 1983 Appropriation bill. During the past session, Parnell also served as vice-chairman of House Committees on Public Utili ties and Courts & Judicial Districts and was a member of House Committees on Agriculture. State Government. Congressional Re districting and Wildlife Resources. In a statement. Parnell said, "1 want to assure the constituents of 4Fun Day' For Council Several months ago the Council Cub Scout Program Chairman Julian Butler conceived the idea of one gigantic day of fun for Cub Scouts. The purpose of that meeting was to save many volunteer hours of driving time as well as professional time and expense in attending so many Cub Scout activity meetings during the year. Also of paramount importance was the increased at tendance desired at Cub program activities. The results was a concept called Cub Scout Fun Day. Cub Scout Fun Day combined many Cub Scout events such as the Council Pinewood Derby, Council Physical Fitness Contest and added a Coun cil Kite Derby, Sail Boat Regatta, and picnic. In the past these various activi ties have attracted no more than 50 participants. By having them com bined at one day at Camp and allowing Cub Scouts from all over the council to participate in some events, the first Annual Cub Scout Fun Day attracted 375 Cubs plus approximately 200 leaders and parents. In preparing for the meeting the committee felt that if we could attract 200 people, which would be four times our normal participa tion, that we would be doing an outstanding job. Instead, we at tracted almost 600 participants. The program was chaired by Julian Butler. Julian was assisted by volunteers from throughout the council. Coastal District took re sponsibility for the Pinewood Derby with the special assistance of the Fort Fisher Air Force personnel. The Sail Boat Regatta was chaired by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Eplee of Whiteville. with the very capable assistance of John Bishop of White Oak. The Physical Fitness Contest was headed by the volun teers and professional staff of the Central District with Parker Hardy as the coordinator. The Kite Derby was led by Elsie Hair and Virginia Smith of Eliza bethtown. The Trading Post was managed by Donna Garrison. Pam Jeffreys and other volunteers. Attendance was as follows: Coastal District 172. Central Dis trict 27. Western District 63. Waccamaw District 44. Bladen District 69. for a total of 675. the 12th Senatorial District that the experience and senority that I have gained during my four terms in the House is transferable to the Senate and would be recognized by the Leadership of the Senate in making committee assignments. I have always sought and have received assignments to those committees that would best serve the consti tuents of my district and if elected to the Senate. I will again seek assignments to those committees that will be most beneficial to Robeson and Hoke Counties." Parnell, a Baptist, has been active in his church and denomina tion and has served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon in the Parkton Baptist Church. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Meredith College, hav ing just recently rotated off. and during his tenure as a Trustee he also represented Meredith as a member of the Board of Directors of N.C. Association of Private Colleges and Universities. Prior to election to the N.C. House of Representatives, he served 5 years as Mayor of Parkton and resigned in 1%9 to accept an appointment to the North Carolina Highway Commission by Governor Bob Scott. 3. Box 36. Raeford. was charged with shoplifting a set of earrings worth $2.50. Frank Branch. 510 W. Fifth Ave., reported April 28 a hubcap valued at S30 disappeared from his 1975 Oldsmobile while the car wasi parked in his yard. Macks reported April 27 a pair of men's slacks worth $15.99 stolen. Elizabeth McRavian of Rt. 2. Box 225, Laurinburg, was charged with larceny. Macks on Monday reported a $9.97 pair of tennis shoes was stolen. Robert Lee Goodman, Page and Trust Co. Building, was charged with larceny. The sheriff's department re ported the following. Eric Daniel Cobb. Rt. 3, Rae ford, reported April 27 his $800 heat pump was stolen that day or the day before. Someone broke into the home of Betty Odom on Rt. 1, Raeford, April 16 and stole some jewelry. Crossroad Grocery lost $1.50 worth of soft drinks and cookies to a thief who broke into the store April 24 or 25. David Ray Fowler, Rt. 1, Shan non, reported April 21 a bicycle stolen April 20 or 21 from his property. A $305 boat was stolen from the property of Ralph McQueen on Rt. 1. Red Springs, April 26 or 27. An air conditioner and heat pump valued at $800 were stolen from Eric Daniel Cobb, Rt. 3, Raeford. April 26 or 27. John Howard Graham was charged with larceny of $12 worth of gas from a truck owned by Dundarrach Trading Co. on Rt. 1, Shannon, and with misdemeanor possession of marijuana Saturday after officers investigated a car parked at the company building but not owned by the company. Queenmore Woman Slain A 34-year-old Queenmore wo man was shot to death shortly before 11:25 a.m. Monday, and a 55-year-old man was arrested -and charged with murder in her death, the Hoke County Sheriffs Depart ment reported. The victim was Joyce Cunning ham of Rt. 3. Raeford. The report says she was killed by a charge from a 12-gauge shotgun at a house in Queenmore. Charged with the shooting was John Lewis McNeill of Rt. 3. Raeford, the department said. The HOME IMPROVEMENT LOANS / A ? No bond had been set up to Tuesday afternoon. A 96-hour hearing for McNeill was expected to be held Thursday in Hoke County District Court. The reason for the shooting and other details were not available Tuesday. Pickup truck after accident. [Staff photo. ) Pickup Truck Overturns A pickup truck carrying three Hoke County High School students from school overturned about 3:10 p.m. April 27 at the intersection of SR 1143 and SR 1149 about a halt mile south of the school. State Highway Patrol Trooper R.V. Lee said he advised the students to see a doctor for possible injuries though none appeared to be hurt. The driver. Larry Dale Wichard. 16. of Rt. 1. Box 57. Raeford. was "shaken up." the officer said, and was checked at the scene by Hoke County Ambulance Service Emergency Medical Tech nicians. Lee said Wichard was charged with improper passing. He said Barrv Cribb. lb, and Gilbert Cribb. 18. brothers, of Rt. 3. Box 298 Raeford. were the other students riding in the truck, a 1980 Chevrolet Luv. The damage to the truck was "substantial." Lee added. He said the accident happened when Wichard was attempting to pass another vehicle as both were traveling south on SR 1 143. He said the truck approached the intersec tion too fast; the brakes locked as Wichard applied them. Lee said the truck stopped in the west lane of SR 1 149 after turning over. Alarcon of Fayetteville. graduated from Methodist College of Fayetteville Sunday, and Alarcon also was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. Miss Wilde and Alarcon s mother are pinning the bars on the new officer 's shoulder straps. Miss Wilde and Alarcon receiwd Bachelor of Science degrees at Sunday's Commencement. Alarcon graduated magna cum laude.
