Engelson today announced and commented upon the May 30 Moore County Choral Society spring concert program, to be given in the Cardinal Ballroom of the Pinehurst Hotel at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. that Sunday. Mr. Engelson is in his first year as music director of MCCS, having joined that organization last Sep tember. He came from several very successful choral directing and teaching posts in the Minneapolis area and is currently head of the music department at St. Andrews College. Laurinburg. In MCCS, the music director exercises complete control over the selection and interpretation of the program selections. Mr. Engelson's first and most recent appearance with MCCS, their Christmas Con cert on December 6, was by far the most successful singing event ever held in the Sandhills, with an attendance of over 1250. This time Mr. Engelson feels he has again made a selection of such wide diversity and appeal as to gain strong support from music lovers in the Sandhills. He commented: "The program is divided into four sections, each refreshingly different from another. Section titles convey the idea, thus: I Two Anthems and a Motet; II A Choral Masterwork; III Love Songs of Vienna; and IV A Touch of Folk. "We will start with Handel's 'Glory and Worship', a joyful, robust anthem in the mold of his 'Worthy Is the Lamb' and 'Hallelu jah Chorus". Then follows' a mood of profound mystical spirituality in the motet 'Let Nothing Ever Grieve Thee' by Johannes Brahms. The group closes with 'Great Is the Lord' by the greatest of Canadian composers. Healey William. This anthem takes the listener through graceful melodic movement and ingenious rythmic subtlety repre senting the best of William. "The genius of Wolfgang Ama deus Mozart shines through the whole of his delightful and strong setting of the 'Te Deum' text. The composition is full of youthful energy and so it should be as Mozart composed it in 1769 when he was only thirteen years old!' "After an intermission, the audi ence will be transported to the world of romance in three quarter time through Johannes Brahms' 'Lieberslieder Walzer' which we are calling Love Songs of Vienna.' In this section the listener will be treated to the special artistry of fifteen singers appearing variously as soloist, in ensembles and with the entire chorus in nine selections from this great work. Further, the sophisticated and beautiful four hand piano accompaniment will add to the interpretation. Brahms, always lover of Vienese waltzes and admirer of the 'Waltz King' Johann Strauss II, left a legacy that only fortified the appreciation of both. "The final pieces are a potpourri of favorites of mine. The first ?Wedding March from Jamtland' is a t'olk-like piece with flute, clarinet ; and string bass accompaniment j that depicts a marriage celebration in the Swedish province of Jamt- A land. Composed by the con- ? temporary Swedish composer Anders Ohrwall. it is unique in that there is no text -- only syllables such as 'doo'. 'doh' and 'dum'. "Then follows a change of mood with "Aftonen' (Evening), a beauti ful impressionistic piece that de picts the natural beauty of the Swedish homeland of its composer. Hugo Alfven. The listener truly I feels the stillness of the woods .... echos of the distant horns glowing of the sunset. "Our concert will close with two of the best arrangements by the well-known American composer, arranger and conductor, Norman Luboff. The first is the sprightly and always popular 'When the Saints Go Marching In'. And to - close in a manner appropriate to a I Memorial Day concert. 1 II guaran tee that we will sing our hearts out in Luboff's fine collection of patriotic songs titled 'American Medley'!" Dr. Joseph Currie, ticket chair man for the Spring Concert points out that tickets are now available at the Sandhills Arts Council. Camp bell House, 482 E.
