Mosquito Control Methods Listed
With the recent weather and
abundance of water in low lying
areas, many Hoke County citizens
presently or shortly will have a
mosquito problem.
Adult mosquitoes frequently rest
in grass, shrubbery, or other
foliage; but they never develop
there. Mosquitoes develop only in
water. Standing water can produce
a brood of mosquitoes in a few
days.
The Hoke County Health De
partment and Agriculture Exten
sion Office recommend the follow
ing cleanup activities to reduce the
mosquito population.
-Empty, remove, cover, or turn
upside down any receptable that
would hold water, particularly old
bottles and tin cans.
-Change water and scrub vases
holding flowers or cuttings twice
each week or grow cuttings in sand.
-Discard old tires or store them
indoors. Discarded tires should be
sent to approved disposal sites or
reclamation centers.
-Screen rain barrels and open
ings to water tanks.
-Repair leaky plumbing and
outside faucets.
-Fill or drain areas that hold
stagnant water.
-Connect waste-water drains to
approved sewage disposal systems.
-Clean clogged roof gutters and
drain flat roofs.
-Fill holes in trees with sand or
mortar. Drain or spray them as
required.
-Stock ornamental ponds with
mosquito fish.
-Change water in birdbaths twice
weekly; in wading pools, weekly;
and in watering pans, daily.
Other techniques can minimize
the mosquito problem, such as use
of a repellant on exposed skin and
clothing; installation of tight fitting
window screens and doors; and use
of the proper insecticide to kill the
mosquito. These are individual
efforts that may be taken to reduce
an individual exposure to mos
quitoes.

Kids See Turks Grow From Cells
Mrs. Sandra Home's West Hoke
School kindergarten students have
been learning about yonng turkeys,
and from the very beginnings of the
little birds at that.
They were given .^u\- eggs about
Easter time by the Tar Heel Turkey
Hatchery, and from then on watch
ed the birds develop daily from
the beginning of life till they were
ready to come out of their shells.
They didn't see them actually break
out, because the little turks did this
the night of May 4 in the class
room. But they saw them the next
morning when they arrived for
class.
What allowed the children to see
inside the eggs while the turkeys
were developing was a special
instrument used the U.S. Depart
ment of Agriculture. It was loaned
to the students by the husband of
Eloise Furr, the class teacher's
assistant. He works for the USDA.
The children also took care of the
turkeys before they came out of
their shells: they turned the eggs
over each day till three days before
the birds were hatched. Mrs. Fun
noted, "The turkeys hatched just in
time for Mother's Day,"
The babies came into the world
28 days after life started in the
eggs.
The eggs were kept warm and
dry inside a special closed box
heated by a light bulb. They also
saw chickens develop through all
stages. The chicken eggs were given
by Charles Wilson.
