In School Auditorium Upchurch Chorus In 4 Wiz' And 4 Wizard Of Oz' The countdown has started for the Upchurch Junior High Chorus. ^ The students are working over time to pui the finishing touches on their musical production of "The Wizard of Oz ' and "The Wiz." Many parents and friends have worked very hard on costumes and scenery so that our production will be the next best thing to Broadway. Cast members include: Kelly Chalaire as Dorothy, Quy Tillman as Glinda, the good witch; Brett ^McDanieis, Randall Matthews, And Donnie Henderson as the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion; Todd Odom as the Wizard; Tripp Simpson as the Mayor; a Lullaby League, and Lollipop Guild and lots of Munchkins. Here Post Adjutant Bill Jones is giving the check to the Center's director. Judy Crawley. The Renter serves pre-school-age children who have disabilities of various kinds. Wones learned from Mrs. Rhonda Holt that the Center needs help and obtained authorization from the post to give the check. Mrs. Holt gave him the information because she is interested in helping the Center, though she has no children there, Mrs. Crawley said. Mrs. Holt is on the staff of the Raeford city administration. Mrs. Crawley said the Center has to raise a total of S 35.000 for next year's operations primarily because of the loss of federal funds by the Reagan administration's expense-cutting. She says the Center also needs more room, because she has had to turn away for lack of sufficient space parents who want their children admitted to the Center. [Staff photo]. ?Sanderson Files For N.C. House Verna "Louise" Sanderson, a Democrat, filed for a seat in the N.C. House of Representatives from District 16 at 11.30 a.m. Friday, May 7. Miss Sanderson said: "Recently people representing us in state government have stated their inten tion of withdrawing due to the ?amount of time involved. It is important that we keep the high standards of representation of the people that we have had in the past and maintain good representation for all people. I have the time and feel 1 am qualified through educa tion and experience to represent our district and pledge to do this to the best of my ability if elected." Miss Sanderson is a native of Robeson County, and her parents were Solomon ("Sol") D. and Vernie Nobles Sanderson, life-long merchant of Lumberton and far mer. On June 30, 1981, Louise retired after approximately 26 years as a probation/parole officer for North Carolina. In 1978 she was chosen Probation/ Parole Officer of the Year and represented the Depart ment of Correction at the American Correctional Association Conven tion. She is a graduate of Lumberton High School and holds a bachelors' ? Church School will begin at 9:45 a.m.; Morning Worship at 1 1 a.m.; dinner on the grounds at 1:30 p.m.; Afternoon Worship at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. John W. McRae and at 4 p.m. a Gospel Program featuring the Happy Land Junior Singers and the Mt< Pisgah Baptist Church Choir. The public is invited. Brother Grady McRae, program chairman and Rev. Miss Sanderson also attended Raleigh School of Commerce and worked in the bookkeeping depart ment of Merchant Supply Com pany. She worked on the tobacco market and maintains an interest in farming. While employed with Reynolds & Co., she became a registered representative of the N.Y. Stock Exchange. Miss Sanderson is a member of the First Baptist Church, has held local and state offices in Eastern Star, and is a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi. She also is a member of the Robeson County Democratic Women's Association. Freedom Chapel 117th Anniversary This Week Freedom Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church is celebrating its 117th Church Anniversary May 17-23. Rev. J.W. Gorham and members of the Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church opened the service on Monday evening. Rev. Charles Chalmers and members of McLauchlin Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church were in charge of service on Tuesday. Wednesday evening's speaker was to be Dr. M.H. Williams, pastor of Franklin Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Laurinburg. Rev. W.K. Mitchell and mem bers of Silver Grove Missionary Baptist Church will be in charge of service on Thursday, and on Fri day, Revs. Cohildia M. Lyons, pastor of Mt. Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, and Hattie M. McRae. pastor of Williams Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Alma, will preach Sermonettes (both are former local preachers at Freedom Chapel). On Saturday evening, May 22, beginning at 7 one young lady will be crowned "Miss Freedom Chapel for 1982," in the First Miss Freedom Pageant.
