Barefoot-Scarboro Nuptials
'Exchanged Here Saturday
Miss Debra Carroll Scarboro,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lacy
Carroll Scarboro, Jr. of Raeford
and Jerry Alan Barefoot, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Earl Rudolph Barefoot of
Raleigh, were united in marriage
on Saturday, May 15, at 3:00 p.m.,
in the Raeford United Methodist
Church. The Rev. Arthur Winstead
officiated for the double ring
ceremony.
) The church altar was centered
with a floral arrangement with two
brass urns and two candelabra on
either side. Family pews were
marked with hurricane globes ac
cented with greenery and ribbons.
Mrs. Betty Upchurch, organist,
and soloists. Miss Amy Hemmens
and Larry Upchurch, provided
nuptial music. Selections included
"Evergreen", "One Hand, One
^ Heart", and "Wedding Prayer".
Given in marriage by her father,
the bride wore a formal gown
featuring a chapel-length train of
Chiffonette and sculptured Chan
tilly lace over taffeta. The fitted
lace bodice featured a Queen Anne
neckline outlined with scalloped
lace etched with seed pearls, full
length tapered lace sleeves ending
with a ruffle over the hand and a
natural waistline accented with a
| satin bow and ribbon streamers.
? The flared skirt extended into a
chapel train. A scalloped Chantilly
lace ruffle bordered the hemline of
the gown. Her headpiece was a
layered waltz-length mantilla of
bridal illusion bordered with scal
loped Chantilly lace and accented
with lace motifs flowing from a
Chantilly lace cap etched with seed
pearls.
^ Wanda Miller of Virginia Beach,
w Va. was maid of honor. She was
attired in a kelly green floor-length
dress with attached cape and
draped neckline in front and back.
Her headpiece was a green hat with
yellow roses and yellow ribbons
extending down the back of the
dress. She carried a wicker basket
of mixed spring flowers.
Bridesmaids, whose attire was
identical to that of the maid of
honor were Lisa Crowder of Rae
) ford, Karen Nicholson of Raleigh,
and Jill Coughlin of Charleston,
S.C.
Mr. Barefoot was his son's best
man. Ushers were Bob Barefoot,
brother of the bridegroom; Brian
Scarboro, brother of the bride; and
Ridge Nance of Raleigh.
Tlie mother of the bride wore a
light green floor-length dress
fashioned with a lace bodice,
fc sleeves, and a natural waistline
with tie belt.
The bridegroom's mother wore a
yellow floor -length dress of chiffon
over taffeta.
For traveling, the bride wore a
white accordion pleated skirt with
matching waist-length shirt and
matching accessories.

Beach, the couple will make their
home in Greenville.
The bride and bridegroom are
both students at East Carolina
University in Greenville.

book was kept by Miss Susan
Townsend. Tea girls were Miss
Suzette Skipper of Fayetteville,
Miss Meredith McDonald of

REHEARSAL DINNER
A rehearsal dinner was hosted by
the bridegroom's parents on Friday
evening at the Sheraton Inn in
Southern Pines for members of the
wedding party and out of town
guests.
BRIDESMAIDS' LUNCHEON
A bridesmaids' luncheon was
held on Friday, May 14, at the
home of Mrs. Betty Skipper in
Fayetteville. Assisting with the
luncheon were Mrs. Lacy Scarboro
and Miss Suzette Skipper. Special
guests were the bridal couple's
mothers, Mrs. Carroll Scarboro
and Mrs. Earl Barefoot.
PRE-NUPTIAL PARTIES
A floating shower honoring Miss
Scarboro was held on Friday
evening, May 8, between the hours
of 7 and 9 p.m. in the Fellowship
Hall of the Methodist Church.
Hostesses were Mrs. Flora Alice
Crowder and Miss Lisa Crowder,
Mrs. Mary Brady, Mrs. Lula
Davis, and Miss Amy Hemmens.
The hostesses presented the
honoree with a wrist corsage of silk
flowers.
Out of town guests were Mrs.

LUNCHEON HONORS

JONES
Mrs. Robert Townsend and Miss
Susan Townsend entertained at a
luncheon in honor of Misses Debra
Scarboro and Barbara Ann Jones,
brides-elect, on Saturday, May 9,
at the Manor Inn in Pinehurst.
Places were laid for fifteen. Two
potted geraniums decorated the
dining table and were later pre
sented to the honorees.
The brides-elect were presented
gifts of china in their chosen
patterns by Mrs. Townsend, and
baskets of dried flower arrange
ments, by Miss Townsend.
Mrs. Dennis Ellis and daughters,
Diana and Kristen returned to her
home in Cherry Point after spend
ing the past three weeks here with
relatives. Her husband, Sgt. Den
nis Ellis of the U.S. Marine Corps,
has been attending the Naval
Weapons School in China Lake,
Calif, for the past three weeks.
Baker - Beaver
The Rev. and Mrs. Billy C.
Beaver announce the marriage of
their daughter, Melissa Leahanne,
to Norris C. Baker of Wilmington,
on Saturday evening. May 15, 1982
at the home of the bride.
The groom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs, William L. Baker of Wilming
ton.
The bride was escorted by her
father who also officiated the
ceremony.
Wedding music was provided by
pianist, the Rev. Bev. Tillman and
vocalist, Charles Hottel.
A reception was held following
the ceremony at the home.
The bride attended Campbell
University and is now employed
with Pine Hurst.
The bridegroom is a graduate of
Campbell University. He is em
ployed with Pine Needles.
The couple will make their
home in Southern Pines.
Luncheon Fetes
Miss Wood
On Saturday, May 15, Miss
Martha Ann Wood was honored
with a luncheon at the home of
Mrs. Joe Upchurch. Other
hostesses were Mrs. Harry Turner
of Gatesville, and Dr. Ann Godfrey
of Raleigh.
Upon arrival, the hostesses pre
sented the honoree with a corsage
of daisy pompons.
Places were laid for twelve at
individual tables in the living room.
A buffet luncheon was served from
the dining room table which was
covered wtth a linen and lace table
cloth and centered with an arrange
ment of silk flowers.
Special guest was Mrs. Chester
Brown of Goldsboro, mother of the
groom -elect.
The hostesses remembered Miss
Wood with gifts of china and
crystal.
Bridol Luncheon

Miss Linda Mercer", May bride
elect of Ted Davis, was guest of
honor on Wednesday, May 12, at a
linen luncheon in Lumberton at
John's Restaurant. Hostesses were
Mrs. Carl Livermore and Mrs. John
Polok .
Upon arrival, the honoree was
presented a corsage of white Fiji
mums and baby's breath. The
luncheon tables were centered with
arrangements of pink roses and
miniature carnations. The bride
elect's place was marked with a
pink rose. Covers were laid for
fourteen.
Following the lunch of congealed
salad, crepes, and strawberry des
sert, the honoree opened the
shower gifts of beautiful linens.
The hostesses' gift was a Quaker
lace tablecloth and napkins.

It was held at Five Points United
Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Upon arrival Miss Laviner was
presented with a corsage of White
Carnations by the hostesses. The
mothers of the bride-elect and
groom -elect were also presented
corsages.
Guests were invited to the re
freshment table that was covered
with a white linen tablecloth and
centered with an arrangement of
silk flowers and candles. Punch,
cake squares, nuts & mints were
served.
Miss Laviner was presented a
lingerie chest from the hostesses*.
Barbara Laviner and David
Currie are to be married on June
27th.
On Sunday, May 16 guests in the
home of Mrs. Ellicia McMillan
were Mrs. Mildred B. Hill and
Mrs. Bessie G. Currie, both of
Southern Pines.
UDC Holds
May Meeting
The Raeford chapter of the
United Daughters of the Confeder
acy met on May 14 at the home of
Miss Josephine Hall. Mrs. Mari
anna McLean, vice-president, pre
sided and led the ritual, pledge of
allegiance, and salutes to the flags.
Miss Hall reported that the
cemetery committee had found over
eighty cemeteries in the county and
that these would be located on
maps and a copy sent to the State
Archives. Mrs. McLean reported
on the District meeting held in
Dunn and that the Raeford chap
ter's yearbook won first place. Miss
Sarah Lytch urged everyone with
written family histories to give a
copy to the local library. Mrs. Mary
McNeill urged everyone to keep the
scrapbook in mind by contributing
materials, articles, pictures and
support. A committee was ap
pointed to make plans for the June
meeting which will be a luncheon.
An account of the life of General
Ashby was read by Mrs. Mary
McNeill. The poem of the month,
"Lines On A Confederate Note"
was read by Miss Isabel McFadyen.
During the social hour, refresh
ments were served by the hostesses.
Miss Hall, Mrs. Janie Monroe, and
Mrs. Ethel Monroe.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gatlin have
returned from a 10 day visit in Long
Beach, Calif, where they visited
Mrs. Gatlin's sister and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Riddle and
Mrs. Gatlin's brother, Clinton
Ross, and family. While in Calif,
they spent one day and night with
Dr. and Mrs. Tom Shapiro in Palm
Springs. Calif. Local residents will
remember Mrs. Shapiro as Mary
Roberts, daughter of Mrs. Eloise
Roberts of Harris Ave., Raeford.
