Safety Tips
The Memorial Day weekend
traditionally kicks off the peak
driving season. Millions of motor
ists will be taking to the nation's
highways, spurred by ample gaso
line supplies and prices substantial
ly lower than a year earlier.
The Insurance Information In
stitute notes that drunk drivers and
seat belt use are getting special
attention this year from law en
forcement and safety officials.
Police in North Carolina are
stepping up campaigns to keep
drunk drivers off the road, en
couraged by stronger laws in a
number of states and massive
publicity generated by victims of
drunk drivers.
A total of 12 people were killed in
traffic accidents in North Carolina
over the Memorial Dav weekend in
1981.
The Institute says thousands of
lives could be saved annually if all
drivers and their passengers used
seat belts at all times. The belts can
prevent ejection from a vehicle and
reduce contact with the interior of
the vehicle in the event of a
collision.
Last year, traffic accidents over
the Memorial Day weekend took
420 lives across the country and
another 20,000 people suffered
disabling injuries, according to the
National Safety Council. This year,
the Safety Council predicts that
from 400 to 500 people will lose
outstanding common stock.
Family Dollar Stores operates a
chain of 51 1 retail discount stores
in ten Southeastern states. The
company has opened 56 new stores
since the beginning of its fiscal year
on September 1, 1981. and expects
to open approximately 16 addi
tional stores during the remainder
of the fiscal year.
The stores offer a variety of
merchandise for family and home
needs including clothing, linens.
household products, housewares
and automative parts.

"Die Institute offers these tips to
motorists who want to avoid be
coming an accident statistic:
--Observe the speed limit.
--Yield the right of way, even if
the other driver is wrong.
--Keep a safe distance from the
car ahead of you.
-Drive during daylight hours
whenever possible.
--Don't drink and drive.
Knowing some of the causes of
accidents - and driving defensively
-- could help prevent a serious
accident, the Institute says.
The 55 mile-per-hour national
speed limit has had an extremely
positive effect by saving lives and
reducing gasoline consumption.
But driving for hours on an
Interstate highway with no traffic
lights can produce conditions
where even a rested driver can fall
asleep, the Institute cautions. A
driver also could become less alert,
increasing the danger of being
involved in an accident.
Regular stops to get out and
stretch, avoiding heavy meals while
driving, keeping a car well venti
lated, constantly checking mirrors,
and chewing gum are good ways to
stay alert. It's also best to stop for
the night when fatigued, rather
than risk falling asleep at the
wheel.

Motorists often can avoid
mechanical breakdowns by having
their cars serviced and checked
before leaving on a trip.
The Institute suggests contacting
your insurance agent or company
representative as part of the pre
trip preparations. Drivers should
consider increasing bodily injury
and property damage liability
coverage to protect against esca
lating damage awards in auto
negligence suits. In many cases,
minimum liability coverage under
state financial responsibility laws
falls far short of current awards.
Driving to Canada should pre
sent no problem if you're properly
insured in your home state. But you
need to carry evidence of financial
responsibility, the Institute says.

Many tobacco farmers in Hoke
County gave a sigh of relief when
the rain came last week. Trans
plants were having trouble hanging
on because of the dry weather, and
some farmers had some plants that
died before the rain came.
Unfortunately, with that rain
storm came some scattered hail. In
most cases, however, the buds and
smaller leaves around the bud were
unharmed. According to Dr. Bill
Collins, tobacco specialist at N.C.
State, yield losses will be minimal
at this stage so long as the plants
survive. Farmers who suffered
damages from the hail should
continue regular cultural practices,
but should watch for diseases such
as black shank which could more
easily infect the injured (open)
plants.
With the large amount of rain
(two inches in some areas) in such a
short time, tobacco plants could
also wilt temporarily. This is
because there is a temporary lack of
oxygen from fields that are flooded
but properly drained. Almost com
plete recovery is expected when this
occurs.
As far as insects are concerned,
there have been above average
counts of flea beetles found on
tobacco transplants this season.
Some of the recommended treat
ments are Guthion, Lannate,
Azodrin, Orthene, or Penncap-M.
Treatments should be made when
eight or more adult flea beetles are
found per small plant.
Concerning fertilization: All of
eliminates the possibility of your
car being impounded or driving
privileges suspended in case of an
accident.
If your destination is Mexico,
you muat carry an auto insurance
policy written by a company based
in Mexico. A Mexican auto en- |
dorsement attached to a United
States policy is not sufficient.
It's easy to meet the Mexican
auto insurance requirements.
Agents of Mexican insurance
companies are found in almost all
American cities on or near the
border. They sell a short term
"Special Automobile Policy for
Tourists" which provides the pro
per protection. The cost of this
policy for a one-week stay varies
depending on the value of the car
and the amount of coverage pur
chased.
This Mexican policy should be
accompanied by a listing of the
agents and the adjusters who
represent tl)e company, in case you
are involved in an accident.
If you're without such a policy
and involved in an accident, your
car may be impounded and you
imprisoned. And that's no way to
spend a vacation.
