Girl Scout Leaders, Assistants Honored
Hoke County Girl Scout leaders
and assistant leaders were honored
Thursday night at the Hoke County
Public Library at a "Thank You"
A Night, tor their volunteer services.
The honorees were awarded
gifts, many made or arranged by
hand specially for the occasion.
They are: Mrs. Hattie McRae.
Service Unit chairman, three cro
cheted roses with a yellow ribbon;
Mrs. Pam Frederick, media repre
sentative. a large crocheted rose
corsage with a ribbon made of
newsprint; Mrs. Shirley Frahm.
^QSP manager, a large crocheted
^ corsage with a ribbon made of
pictures cut from magazines; Mrs.
Kay Thomas, cookie chairman, a
large crocheted rose corsage with a
crocheted chocolate chip cookie at
its center; Mrs. Pat Sappenfield.
Advertizing Board chairman, a
large crocheted corsage with a
simulated piece of "board" on the
ribbon; and Mrs. Dot Cameron,
Hoke County Library librarian.

Mrs. Frahm, "Mrs. Thomas, and
Mrs. Sappenfield were unable to
attend the meeting.
Special Valuable Volunteer
awards were given to Mrs. Betsy
Collins. Mrs. Karen Rooks. Mrs.
Collins serves as a troop leader.

service, is the first Hoke County
leader to take a troop to a resident
camp for a week, and is a Brownie
consultant. She will take a larger
group to a resident canip this
summer.
Onnie Dudley was honored as an
organizer, recftgnized at the meet
ing though absent, and was
awarded a Girl Scout stick pin.

and Sandra Galberth were recog
nized . though absent, tor their
service as troop consultants and
were awarded silk tlower stick pins.

Cook Tries Out With
?Dallas ForBackfield
Anthony Cook of Raeford tried
out Saturday to play for the Dallas
Cowboys as a defensive back.
Cook. 23-year-old son of Joe and
Dorothy Cook of East Prospect
Avenue, told a reporter in Dallas
that "I just came Irom Mars Hill
? and need a job." He went to Dallas
from Raeford at his own expense
(S500). Cook graduated from Mars
Hill College which is about 20 miles
north of Asheville. on May 16 with
a degree of Bachelor of Science in
physical education.
During the course of studying at
the Baptist mountain school, he
played three seasons of football. In
his junior year. Mars Hill got a
record of 8-1-1 and got as far as the
quarter finals of the NA1A national
^ playoffs before being eliminated.
Cook dislocated a finger playing in
a game that season but kept on
playing anyway, and had corrective
surgery done on the injured joint. It
doesn't bother him anymore, he
said Monday in talking with a
reporter at The News-Journal .
Cook played his college ball
under Coach Claude (Hoot) Gib
son, a former Oakland Raider
(defensive back and punt-return
specialist).
Cook weighs 198 pounds and
stands 6 feet 1 inch.
At Hoke High, he played three
years of football as a defensive end,
first under Coach Bill Cameron,
then under Coach Jack Harris,
graduating in 1977.
Cook isn't just waiting to hear
from Dallas right now.
He's looking for a job in physical
education.
'Strike At The Wind'
Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission will sponsor
a trip to see the Outdoor Drama, "Strike At The Wind,' on
Thursday, July 15. The first 35 senior citizens (60 and over) will
he permitted to attend free. The Parks and Recreation office has
obtained 35 complimentary tickets.
Departure time and location will be announced in the future.

Recreation office. All reservations will be on a first come, first
served basis.

Fair To Open Thursday
The 1982 Fort Bragg Fair will
begin Thursday and run through
June 5. Gates will open at 6 p.m.
weekdays and 1 p.m. on weekends
and Memorial Day.
The public is cordially invited to
attend this year's fair, which
promises to be bigger and better
than ever.
Attractions will include a com
plete carnival midway with at least
25 rides for kiddies and adults to
enjoy. There will also be nearly 50
booths offering food and beverages.
GRADUATION SPEAKERS
Todd Buie of Red Springs is
valedictorian, and Brigitte Knight
of Shannon is salutatorian for the
Floral Macdonald Academy 's com
mencement for their Senior Class of
1982. Miss Buie has been a Flora
Macdonald student since the First
Grade and has lettered in high
school years in soccer, basketball
and Softball. She also was chief
junior marshal for the 1981 com
mencement. and was Homecoming
Queen and May Queen and a
nominee for a Morehead Scholar
ship. She is a member of the Beta
Club academic honor society and
holds a DAR Citizenship Award.
Miss Buie also is president of the
Senior Class. Miss Knight entered
the academy in 1979 on trans
ferring from Red Springs High
School. She was a junior marshal,
editor of the school newspaper, and
business manager of the yearbook.
She H?uj a Morehead Scholarship
Nominee and was vice president of
the Junior Class. Miss Buie is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
T. Buie. and Miss Knight is tin
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry
Knight.

A full circus show with animals,
clowns, acrobats and jugglers will
highlight the fair's events. Two
complete circus shows are sche
duled for weekdays, and three
shows on weekend days.
Disco dances featuring a disc
jockey playing a variety of music
are planned for each night from the
stage area.
A single admission price entitles
all fairgoers to unlimited rides,
attendance at the circus and all side
shows. Tickets are 53 for adults on
weekdays, and S4 on weekends and
Memorial Day. Children under 1 1
years pay one half the adult fare.
Civilian neighbors from the sur
rounding area are welcome and
encouraged to share in the hos
pitality of the Fort Bragg com
munity at the fair.

Army Pvt. Melton D. Barnes,
son of Melton and Juanita Barnes
of Rt. I. Shannon, has completed a
tracked-vehicle mechanic course at
the U.S. Army Armor School. Fort
Knox. Ky.
During the course, students were
trained to repair engines, trans
missions. and the fuel, electrical
and air hydraulic systems of the
Army's tracked-vehicles. They also
learned to perform recovery opera
tions for abandoned, damaged,
disabled or mired vehicles.
His wife. Cloanne. is the daugh
ter of Coether McNeill of Rt. .1.

Airman Dannie McNeill, son of
Gladys E. McNeill of Rt. 1.
Shannon, has graduated from the
U.S. Air Force avionic navigation
systems course at Keesler Air Force
Base. Miss.
Graduates of the course were
taught basic navigation, main
tenance of radio and radar avionic
navigation systems and earned
credits toward an associate degree
in applied science through the
Community College of the Air
Force.
McNeill will now serve at Pope
Air Force Base. N.C., with the

Squadron .

William E. Heath of Aberdeen, has
arrived for duty at Pope Air Force
