Blazers Keep Winning It's now 10 wins and 3 losses for our local Hoke County Blazers semi-pro baseball team. In one of the most exciting weekends of their first season, the Blazers beat Lumber Bridge Satur day 8-5 and really showed what they're made of by getting on top of St. Pauls Sunday afternoon in a 10-inning game. 4-3, at St. Pauls. Following a loss earlier in the schedule to Lumber Bridge, the Blazers have now evened up this strong rivalry at one game each. Kenny Carpenter once again did the expert pitching job for the home boys, scattering four hits and striking out nine of the Lumber Bridge All-Stars. Shortstop Coney managed to get a home run off Carpenter as one of the four hits. The Blazers' eight-run perfor mance was well supported by a 13-hit batting attack, including Stan Cumming's homer and Mark Madden's double and triple for the day. Mike Nieves and Bruce Hurst also showed the big bats in this game. Last Saturday afternoon at St. Pauls the Blazers and the St. Pauls Hawks went at it in a true pitcher's battle. In the 90-degree heat the Blazers played errorless ball and kept the game tight to win in the 10th inning. 4-3. The hits were balanced at 11 for the Blazers, including a homer for Cecil Blake, and 10 hits for the Hawks; but Pitcher Raschad Rahmaan struck out seven Hawks while 13 Blazer batters were fanning the air at the mercy of St. Pauls Ditcher J. Pone. Rahmaan held the line further by giving no free passes to first base. The Blazers tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth on Blake's round tripper. Cummings, the leading hitter of the day, doubled in the sixth and scored when Biake got on safely on an error. Bobby Stephens singled to score Blake, and the Bla/ers led 3-1. But the Hawks came back and tied at 3 in the eighth on a two-run homer. In the 10th inning, th'* Bla/.ers showed a truly professional finish. Carpenter singled, then stole second. A suicide squeeze bunt attempt failed, then Rahmaan drove in the winning run. Interviewed after the game, all Manager Jimmie Conoly had to say was: "This is a ball team, folks!" The Blazers have no scheduled game this weekend but will play Sunday afternoon at Eureka Springs.
