With more cars on the Highways than ever before, a bright spot on the horizon is that the National death toll over Memorial Day weekend was the smallest since 1 949? 3^ 1 traffic deaths, the smallest number in 34 years. In North Carolina the Memorial traffic deaths in 1981 were 378. The highest number of traffic deaths on a Memorial Day weekend was in 1968 when 629 per sons were killed over four days. The highest three day toll was in 1969, when 597 person died. Anyway, we are delighted to note the decrease in deaths this year and hope they will continue to decrease in the years to come. CAR OPERATION COST . . . According to the Consumer Infor mation Center in PueUo, Colo., it costs an estimated Ifgrcents per mile to drive a large car; 21 .4 cents per mile for a compact; 18.9 cents for a subcompact. The cost of buy ing and driving an intermediate size American car 120,000 miles over 12 years costs about $28,640 or 23.8 cents a mile, according to government estimates. PRIESTHOOD . . . According to statistics of the Official Catholic Directory, there are 58,085 religious and diocesan priests in the United States, 315 fewer than last year. The loss of priests comes when the Catholic population of the United States is increasing. The publisher of the Official Catholic Directory reports that this year there are 51,207,579 Catholics in the United States, up 57,737 from last year. HUNT . . . Governor Jim Hunt is smart when he opposes a pro posed salary raise for him when the school teachers are being asked to forego a raise, and hundred of state employees are losing their jobs due to the decrease in tax revenue from its estimate a year ago. Governor Hunt displays a more realistic approach than does some of the Assembly leaders. Rep. William T. Watkins would in crease the Governor's salary from $57,864 to $100,000 and he would make the House Speaker's salary the same as that of the Lieutenant Governor. It's taxpayers money that- the law-makers in Raleigh are talking about and when things are not go ing well in the state where economy Hoke Drug Company 120 N. Main Raeford, N.C. OUR SPECIALS REG. However, scarcely anyone would have thought about such problems as face them today. Studies by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism show that alcohol is involved in 27 percent to 43 percent of the viola tions by youth (13 to 19 years) Traffic accidents are the No. 1 cause of deaths among teenagers, and most of those accidents in volve a drinking driver. With the many evils springing up, PTA really has its hands full, and running over in this 1982 year. AWAY FROM HOME . . . Washington State has recently reduced its sales tax to 5.4% from 5.5^o, but repealed its exemption for food products. SLOW DOWN! ... The slow down in inflation is about the only good news in today's recession ridden economy, according to the Wall Street Journal. However, this achievement is costing the Reagan administration dearly: it is driving a deep budget deficit even deeper! It appears that when inflation which many have been concerned about, starts to even off, then we find another problem facing us -as big as inflation itself, the decrease in tax income! Looks like we have gotten to the place where we can't win for los ing! CANDIDATES . . . This is a hard time for many candidates in North Carolina. Trying to please as many voters as possible without being two-faced. Trying to appease the great variety of state workers, almost an impossible task. Can didates should have an opinion on several subjects, but not every issue. Our advice: Be honest and frank, and not everything to everybody. Orientation For Teen Volunteers There will be a two-dav summer orientation for students 14-18 years old who wish to participate in the volunteer program at Moore Memorial Hospital. This orientation will be held June 21 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the auditorium at the hospital. Some of the skills taught during orientation include: bed-making, wheelchair and stretcher transport, and morning and evening care. After successfully completing orientation, the teens will be assigned to specific times to areas of the hospital for volunteer duties. This is a rewarding pro gram, which offers many oppor tunities for learning experiences in the health care field. All interested students between ages 14 and 18 are invited to attend orientation. Applications will be available at the Volunteer Office and the school offices. Any questions may be referred to: Kathie Tripp, director of volunteer services, telephone 1-295-7810.
