"Things That Matter" by L.'icien Coleman # AN EARLY LOOK AT THE HOLIDAY SEASON When autumn leaves fall and windshields glisten with frost in the early morning, at least in our part of the country, the holiday season is just around the corner. If we were inclinded to forget that fact, advertisers and mer chants will remind us. Where I live, ^Christmas displays started appear ing about the middle of October. It looks a little funny, really, seeing Halloween pumpkins and witches alongside Thanksgiving turkeys and plastic Christmas trees. No, this is not intended to be an invective against merchants and advertisers. They are merely ex ploiting a way of life which all of us together have chosen. Many of us have the uneasy ^"eeling that Christmas isn't what it ^used to be. Somehow it has become polluted. If anything ever was holy about the occasion, it has long since been buried beneath the tinsled garbage. The "holiday sea son" is the time of year when shoppers get more pushy, sales people run out of patience, and everybody talks about "good will," though few experience it. _ The babe-in-the-manager has Aong since been replaced by other symbols of Christmas--the perspir ing red-faced drunk at the office party, fake Santa's who fool no body with their moth-eaten cotton beards, unbelievable crushes of traffic downtown, and the blaring cacophony of tin-can Christmas music assaulting tired ear-drums in every quarter. If you have any notions about changing all of this, forget it. This ^annual madness is too much a part of our culture. You can't do anything about how our society observes Christmas. But you can determine how you are going to observe it. If you and your family really want Christmas to be a holy day. instead of the usual holiday, you have it in your power to make it just that. Better start now. though, before Avou get caught up in the whirlpool ^of activity that makes Christmas what it is. Make some basic decisions now. ahead ol time. First, determine to inlcude wor ship in your family plans. Plan to attend worship services in your church. But. also, include simple devotional services in your home. Don't open the gifts this year without emphasizing God's great est gift. ^ Second, plan to reach out to ^someone in need. Family Christmas celebrations tend to become in grown. Decide now to use this season to help someone outside your household. Include the whole family in these plans. Finally, plan to use restraint in spending. While some sutler hang overs from too much drinking, many of us are more familiar with the financial hangover which fol lows the annual spending spree. Love isn't measured by the price tag on gifts. Give gilts. But don t forget to give yourself. Correction All requests for transfers of students living in Hoke County to schools outside of Hoke County were turned down by the Hoke County Board of Education May *31 at the board's monthly meeting. The News-Journal report that the requests were approved was an error. The board also required that all Hoke students attending schools outside the county this year return to Hoke County schools the 1982-83 school year. Permission to attend out-of-county schools is ^granted for a year only. Students 'attending out of county schools with this permission must obtain a renewal of permission from the board to resume out-of-county at tendance the following year. DANIEL H. DaVANE N.C.
