Winner Of Hoke Miss Black Teen Title Hoke Girl To Compete For State Crown k Cheryl Farmer, a 16-year-old Hoke County High School student, is Miss Black Teenage World of Hoke County and will represent Hoke in the Miss Black Teenage World of North Carolina Pageant June 26 in Raleigh, at Meredith College, competing for the state crown. Miss Farmer, daughter of Mar garet and Ernest Farmer of Rt. 2, | Box 446, Raeford, won the Hoke ' County pageant title the night of June 5 in the competition at Hoke County High School. She was among 18 contestants ranging in age from 15 through 17. Named first runnerup was Angela McPhatter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oris McPhatter of Rt. 3, Box 272. Red Springs; and named second runnerup and Miss Congeniality. Angela Copeland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin * Copeland of Box 431, Raeford. All are Hoke High students. Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr., has declared the state pageant date "Touch a Teen" Foundation Day in North Carolina. The other contestants in the Hoke pageant were: Lisa Alford, Gwen Southerland, Sheila Jackson, Laurice Slade, Sylvia Dukes, Kim Kershaw, Tammy Baldwin, Tonja ) Jackson, Monzella Bethea, Myoshi Dudley, Renee Priest, Angela Southerland, Tracie Newkirk, Michelle Allen, and Vickie Blue. Kim Norman. Miss Black Teen age World of North Caorlina, was one of the special guests of the First annual Miss Black Teenage World of Hoke County Pageant. A reception was given in honor of Miss Norman at 11 a.m. June 4 at Raeford City Hall and she was presented the Key to the City of Raeford by Mayor John K. Mc Neill, Jr. John Balfour, chairman of the Board of Hoke County Commissioners, also was on hand, among other public officials, for the ceremony. Following the reception, the contestants were given a cookout at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willie McCaskill, founders of the Hoke pageant. In comments to her visit to Raeford, Miss Norman said, "I've visited cities all across the state, but this is the first time I've ever been presented the key to the city, and the pageant was one of the best I've ever attended." Mrs. Hazel McLaughlin, direc tor and coordinator, said, "Walk ing with the other committee members and the girls in the pageants has been a rich and rewarding experience, and I en joyed every moment immensely." The contestants were judged on poise, talent, intellect, and projec tion. In addition there was sports wear and evening-gown competi tion. The judges were Carrie R. Carter, Carolyn S. Goins, Betty Hunter and Carol Jackson, and Jesse Tabor of Fayetteville; Sheila Hill of Clinton; and Bruce Stan back of Rockingham. Competency Skills Course Set The Hoke High School Compe tency Program is planning a Summer Basic Skills Competency Program again this summer at no cost to students. The purpose of the program is to maintain students' present level of competency and to improve their skills so that they can successfully complete the North Carolina Reading and Math Com petency Tests which are required in order to receive a high school diploma.
