people kttend Meet Black Mountain was the host to the National Affiliation for Literary Advance Bicentennial Conference June 2-6. Over 450 people came from throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii, and Canada. Hoke County was represented by program direc tor Miss Barbara Buie and board ?th airman Mrs. Ruth Ansley. More Than SO seminars and workshops were held. The principal speaker was Mrs. Barbara Bush, wife of the U.S. vice E resident, and a sponsor of the aubach programs. Mrs. Bush calls herself a "cheerleader of literacy." She said, "I sometimes get discouraged by the overwhelm ing number of functional illiterates we hear about in the country. But ^hen I think of Helen Keller." ? "Someone taught Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf, to read. Surely we can teach strong, healthy people to read." Mrs. Bush also said, "I'm riot an expert in the literacy field, or a reading authority, but I'm a cheer leader of proven literacy programs, and yours is one of the best. The program Mrs. Bush was talking about is the Laubach Liter acy International Tutoring Pro gram, created in the 1930s by an American missionary in the Philip pines, Dr. Frank Laubach. His methods are being taught all over the world. Hoke County is privileged to have this same urogram already in progress. The tutors are all trained volunteers who care enough to give of their time and talents to those in need. A If you are interested in this program, please call Miss Buie at ?75-2165 or me at 843-4860. -Bath Ansley, Antioch fi Jesus must have been a very atient man. If not, how could he have put up with his disciples who were so slow to grasp the meaning of his messianic mission? A case in point is the example of James and John, two disciples, who, with Simon Peter, seemed to form an inner circle of Jesus' closest followers. When Jesus ascended the Mount of Transfiguration for a most unique mystical experience, ^jiere were only three disciples "rivileged to go with him: Peter, James and John. And on Maundy Thursday it was these same three whom Jesus took with him into the Garden of Gethsemane for a night of soul-searching. In short: they were close enough to Jesus to have known better. "Known better"? About what? Well, for one thing, they should ?ave known better what Jesus taught about responding to opposi tion. When the people of a certain Samaritan village informed Christ's disciples that he would not be welcome there, James and John were irate: "Lord, do you want us to bid ftre come down from the heaven and consume them?" Tough talk from the disciples of a man who spoke about and demon strated so much love! No wonder, Auke tells us, "he turned and rebuked them." (Luke 9: 51-56). Even more audacious was their request, on another occasion: "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And what they wanted from Jesus was just as shocking: "Grannt us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." How could they fiake such a request? Having been t Caesarea Philippi with him when he rebuked Peter for failing to understand Christ's allusion to the crosses that lay before them. James and John should have learned the lesson. But they didn't and Jesus had to explain once again: "...who ever would be great among you must be your servant". Jesus, it seems to me, would have Jjeen justified if he had lost his patience with James and John, but. instead, he tries to help them: "You do not know what you are asking? Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" Jesus came to minister to the world and following him meant nothing less than that. James and John responded, say ^g "We are able." Nevertheless, when Jesus was crucified a short time later, James and John were among those of whom Matthew wrote: "Then all the disciples forsook him and fled." It was only later, when they thrmidves were , martyred, that it was evident they * had at last learned the lesson . WhoOTw wmM b# |tmI among yon nut bo your nrvant." Among Christ's followers today, I'm afraid, lesson is basically still unlearn REAL ESTATE FOR SALE: Residential lots, city water and sewer, financial terms can be arranged.
