Mackey McDonald won first place in the Kata Division ( archetypical forms of imaginary fighting] and first place in sparring [light-contact fighting] Saturday in the karate competition of the Martial Arts Tournament at Lumherton. McDonald is shown here wearing the two gold medals he won for his victories. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen McDonald and a student of Robert Holroy in the karate class sponsored by the Hoke County Parks and Recreation Department. Several schools were represented in the tournament. McDonald has earned an orange belt, two ranks above the novice white belt, in his karate lessons. The classes are taught Tuesday and Thursday nights. The jacket and orange belt he is wearing form part of his karat egi [uniform]. Men's Softball Action In the first game of action on Tuesday night.
