Heyivards, Friend In June 2 * Crash The Rev. Bill Heyward of Clear water. Fla.. a former Raeford Presbyterian Church pastor, his wife Sarah, and Mrs. John McPhaul of Raeford were injured June 2 when the Heywards' van Mrs. McPhaul was driving was struck by a beer truck at John Balfour Crossroads and N.C. 20 about 10 miles southeast of Rae tord . Mrs. McPhaul. telling of the accident in reply to a query from The News-Journal . said none were injured seriously enough to be hospitalized. She said they were^ treated at Hoke County Medical^ Center in Raeford. Mrs. McPhaul said she had an X-ray examination the next day at Moore Memorial Hospital in Pinehurst because she was continuing to have leg pain. She said none suffered broken bones but were "bruised up and real sore" because of the collision. Heyward was cut on the head and an ear because of the accident she said. Mrs. McPhaul said, however, it was only the help of the Lord that brought them through the accident alive. Mrs. McPhaul and the Hey wards were brought to the Medical Center by the Hoke County Ambulance Service. The Hoke County Rescue Squad also went to the scene and helped. The collision left the 4-year-old van a total loss. The trial ^ of the truck driver on a charge ot failing to yield the right of way is scheduled for District Cdurt July 8. Mrs. McPhaul said. Mrs. McPhaul said she was driving the van on N.C. 20 when the truck ran onto the highway from the rural road. She said she and the Heywards had gone to California and back to Clearwater by plane, and they were making the trip from Clearwater to Raeford* when the collision occurred. After leaving the Medical Center, the Heywards visited at the McPhauls' home till the following Saturday, then went to Lincolnton to visit Mrs. Heyward's parents. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Ramseur. staying there till June 10 when the Hey ward's returned to Clearwater by plane. Heyward served as pastor of the Raeford church from June 1947 to# part of I9t>4. He was honored at the church June 22. 1980, with a special Bill Heyward Day. with his wife and other members of his family attending also as honor guests of the congregation.
