SUMMER HEADING
PROGRAM
JOAB -- "Just Open a Book."
the title of our summer reading
^ program is represented by a green
? frog by the name JOAB. There will
be worksheets for each child who
will be reading; K-6 grades. If you
have just finished sixth Grade you
may join the reading program.
There will be frog footprints put
on your reading chart for each book
you read. Also, there will be
large charts on the windows so
everyone will be able to see how
much you are reading. Your small
chart will be kept here at the library
for you to make sure you will know
at all times where it is.
Registration will begin June 29.
Please don't plan to register before
then. We will be set up to register
on the 29th. To register, we need

Foster delivered a very inspiring
sermon on June 13. The title,
"Life's Salty Tang."
The Mission Friends group met
in Education Building Sunday
morning at 11:00 a.m.
Vacation Bible School is sche
duled for June 21st thru 25th. Ages
? 3 years through Young People.
Presbyterian Church
John F. Sticht, Ruling Elder of
the Spring Lake Presbyterian
Church, preached on June 20th.
Circle One, Women of the
Church held their regular monthly
meeting last Wednesday night in
the home of Mrs. F.R. Weber.
Circle Two, Women of the
Church, met on Friday evening at 3
p.m. with Mrs. N.H Forbis.
Mrs. Margaret Quick. Mr. and
V Mrs. Gary Culp of Raeford and
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Davis of Red
Springs visited Mrs. Ruth Tolar on
Sunday.
Spending several weeks with Mr.
and Mrs. Alfred T. Beck is their
son. T/Sgt. Gary Beck from Los
Vegas. Nev.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wooley went
to McComb. Miss, last weekend to
get their children for the summer
? months.
Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Lewis and
Mr. and Mrs. James Lewis and
daughter Jenny of Laurinburg
spent Friday until Sunday at Myrtle
Beach.
Mrs. Mike Chason returned
home Thursday from Southeastern
Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Elsie Roach Patterson and
Mrs. Betty Roach Moore of Fay
etteville visited Misses Lib and Lois
m Sumner Sunday afternoon.
Miss Melba Jane Powers of
Charlotte spent the weekend with
her sister. Mrs. Henry L. Foster
and Rev. Foster.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred T. Beck
and son. Gary spent several days
last week in Richmond. Va. with
Mr. Beck's sister. Mr. and Mrs.
Langtord. Also, visited Mrs. Marsh
Daniel and son. Charlie in Va.

Mrs. Sidney E. Sumner and
Clinton Jackson attended the
funeral of Mrs. Johnny Sumner's
mother. Mrs. Margaret E. Johnson
of Favetteville on Monday. June
14th.
Burial was in Cumberland Ceme
tery.
Real Estate to Fire Department
Mr. and Mrs. H. Percival John
son. of Rex Lane presented the
Lumber Bridge Volunteer Fire
Department with the deed to their
old building and lot, standing
"downtown" on the east side of
Highway 20.
The Johnson's have always been
generous contributors to the local
Fire Department.

We hope all of you will enjoy
reading all summer even when you
finish your 10 books you still have a
great selection of books to read
from.
There will also be visiting here
for the summer reading program, a
Hanna Barbera character from
Carowinds on August 10. We don't
know which character will be
coming. This will be a morning visit
and we don't have all the informa
tion on it yet. More information
will be published later.
VACATIONS
Mrs. Cameron has been away
three weeks visiting her home in
Nebraska and other family mem
bers in Colorado. She has returned
and is working away trying to get
everything ready for your summer
reading.
Mrs. Conoly has also been on
vacation and enjoyed a quiet week's
rest at home.
Both of these ladies were missed
and we are glad to have them back
at work.
SUMMER HELP
Danny and Michael Roberts will
be working until June 30. Then,
Danny will be picked up on a
different program and will be
working with us for seven more
weeks at 35 hours a week. We will
loose Michael and will miss him.
Denise Graham will be working
on her same CETA program
Gray Retires
After 25 Years
Raymond W. "Pop" Gray re
cently retired from the Dyeing
Plant ot Burlington Industries after
over 25 years of continuous service.
He joined Burlington in De
cember 1956 and held several
manufacturing positions until as
suming his last position as Supply
Room Counter Attendant where he
worked until his retirement.
In recognition of this event.

A WARDED SCHOLARSHIP --John Helbling is receiving a SI 00 check
a scholarship of the Rueford Homemakers Club. The club s president. \h \
Lillian Wood, is presenting the check. Helbling is the son of Sand <?;
Helbling of Puppy Creek and is a 1982 graduate of Hoke County Hi^/>
School. He plans to start at Southeastern Community College in Whitevilfe
in the fall term, majoring in criminal justice. After completing the two year,
at Southeastern he plans to continue his studies at a university to complete
requirements for a degree. Helbling is aiming for a career with the Stat ??
Bureau of Investigation.
