Blazers Win 2, Lose 1 The baseball Blazers. Hoke's own semi-pro team, did itself proud again this past weekend, winning two games and losing a make up. Playing St. Pauls here on Satur day. Jimmy Conoly's men got by the Hawks. II to 9. Ai Eureka Springs Sunday, the Bla/ers won one and lost one against the Orioles. It was 9-8 Orioles in the make-up game, and then a 13-b Blazers victory in the finish. Orlando Fairly pitched the Sat urday game and held the Hawks down while his teammates got the runs to get ahead and stay there. Raschad Rahmaan led the Blazers" hitting attack with a homer and a double. Mike Nieves and Larry McDonald also had two hits apiece. On Sunday the Blazers traveled to Eureka Springs. The afternoon began with the Orioles and our boys making up a game that had been played on May 30 and suspended after 9 innings tied at 8 to 8. The Blazers went scoreless in their halt' of the 10th. but the Orioles crossed the plale in the bottom of the inning to put this game away. In the final game Sunday the Blazers got their bats talking again with 14 hits. Kenny Carpenter went 3 for 5 with a home run. and Lam McDonald contributed a triple. Mark Mkdden. Tim Clark. Stanley Cummings and Mike Nieves were good for the other big hits of the day. Carpenter. Clark and Madden were the RBI leaders. Rahmaan got the win as pitcher, sprinkling 7 hits while his mates played errorless ball. Playgrounds To Open The summer playground programs sponsored by Hoke Coun ty Parks and Recreation Commission started Monday, June 21 Mid will continue through Friday, August 6. Ail fuiltimc playgrounds will operate Monday through Friday 9 a.m. -4:30 p.m., for ages 6-14. Full time sites: J.W. Turlington School, South Hoke School and Scurlock School. The Ave parttime sites will also run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the following locations on the designated days. Monday only - West Hoke School; Tuesday only ? Laurel Hill Baptist Church (Dundarrach area); Wednesday only - Upchurch Gym; Thursday only - Tylertown (Airport area); Friday only -St. Peter's Baptist Church (Rockflsh). All children ages 6-14 are encouraged to take part in these playground programs. Sports, games, crafts, and special events will til highlight the simmer's activities. Tennis Lessons Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission will be spon soring three sessions of tennis lessons. July 5-9, July 12-16 and July 19-23. The classes will be taught at the Hoke High courts and will be limited to the first 10 to register. Cost for each session will be $15. Session I, July 5-9: 8:50 -10 a.m. Beginners ages 7-13; 10:15-11:45 a.m. Beginners ages 14-up. Sessions U and HI will be taught on a level requested by the SiMtc. 'Strike At The Wind' Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission will sponsor a trip to see the Outdoor Drama, "Strike At The Wind," on Thursday, July 15. The first 35 senior citizens (60 and over) will be penmted to attend free. The Parks and Recreation office has obtained 35 complimentary tickets. Departure time and location will be announced in the future. If you are interested in this trip, please register at the Parks and Recreation office. All reservations will be on a first come, first serve basis. Please note the time duutgKduriag the weeks of June 21 and 28 the class will meet CSrl* p'm" Horsley Wins 2 Medals Icesonnia Horsley won two medals in the TAC/USA Junior Olympic North Carolina State Championships Meet. The meet was coordinated bv the Raleigh. Cary. and Wake County Recreation Departments and hosted by the Raleigh Striders Track Club. It was held at the NCSU stadium on June 18-19. Miss Horsley won a gold medal in the 100-meter run with a time ot 12.4 seconds and a silver medal in the long-jump with a jump ot 4.88 meters. On Julv 9-10 Miss Horslev will compete in the TAC/USA Junior Olympic Southeastern States Region III Championships Meet to be held in Columbia. S.C. Last week it was stated that Icesonnia tied the 1982 record set by Carla McLaughlin in the 100 meter dash. It should have stated that she tied the 1981 record set by Miss McLaughlin in the AAU/ USA Junior Olympics.
