North Carolina Department of Human Resources Secretary Dr. Sarah Morrow announced today. Morrow said the improvement in North Carolina's food stamp error 9 rate is the result of a concentrated effort by the state and county social services departments to improve the overall operation of the pro gram. "We are pleased to report that North Caorlina's food statmp program has operated more effi ciently during the last reporting period," she said. The food stamp program, which is largely federally funded, is designed to provide food for the ^ poor who would not otherwise bo able to afford to eat. It is administered by the individual counties under the supervision ot the state's Division of Social Ser vices. Over a half million North Carolinians receive food stamps. Morrow said the latest figures on North Carolina's error rate, which cover a six-month period from ? October 1. 1981 to March 31. 1982. fall slightly below the national average of 13.15 percent. She said the state's error rate for the period was 13.07 percent, an improvement over the previous six-month period ending September 30. 1981. when the error rate reached 14.32 per cent. Error rates are based on over payments. underpayments and payments to ineligible recipients. Morrow said the state's error rate on overpayments and payments to persons who shouldn't have re ceived food stamps was 9.16 per cent. She said the national average during the same time period was 10.57 percent. "The improvement we are now seeing in our error rate indicates to us that we are making progress in improving the way the food stamp program is administered in North Carolina." Morrow said. "Never theless. our error rate is still higher than we'd like, and we won't be satisfied until we get the rate down much further than it is now. A corrective action plan that our Division of Social Services put into effect in April should help us improve the error rate significantly during the next 12 months." Drum's S. Wilkins \center\ recently completed 21) years continuous service at the Rae/ord Plant oi Hurling/on Industries. Wilkins received a certificate and a pearl pin tie lac tor having completed 211 years. He is shown in the picture with his supervisor Bohhy Edwards !/??//. I and Larry Nowell. Department Manager. It takes an average of eighteen months for a one-dollar bill to wear out. * VOTE* CLEO BRATCHER COUNTY COMMISSIONER The People's Candidate Paid by Hoke Civic League Junior Tar Heel Baseball June 14: Carter's Pig N Chicken 14, Raeford Plumbing and Htg. 4 June 15: l.ion's Club 9, Raeford Plumbing and Htg. 7 June 16: Howard Clothiers 17, C arter's Pig N Chicken 10 June 17: Howard Clothiers II, Raeford Plumbing and Htg. 1 Team Standings 1 Howard Clothiers 6 2.
