Some of the voters with elections workers [behind the tables ] at the Raeford Precinct 2 voting place in the Old County Office Building on West Elwood Avenue about 9 a.m. Tuesday. Primary Results (continued from page 1) majority which would mean that runoffs could be called. In the State Senate contest, reports from Hoke and Robeson counties, which make up the ' district, show David Parnell won the Democratic nomination over State Sen. Sam Noble. In the primaries for the nomina tions for Eighth District congress man, Hoke's majority went to Democratic Congressman W.G. (Bill) Hefner of Kannapolis over James R. Ellision, and Republican Harris Blake of Pinehurst over Jake Presson of Rowan County. Hoke f was transferred to the Eighth from the Seventh District by the General Assembly's redisricting this year. In the nonpartisan votes on the amendments, a majority of Hoke voters cast ballots against the proposal to stretch the terms of members of the General Assembly to tour from the present two years. Hoke majorities also voted against the other amendments except No. 3 which concerns State j} Utilities Commission appeals. Based on the totals cast in the sheriff s race, the turnout of voters amounted to 51.4 per cent of the total 8,260 Democrats registered to vote. Of the 407 registered Re publicans. 81 voted in the con gessional primary, the only one Republicans could vote in Tuesday. This amounted to 19.8 per cent of the total Republican registration. ^ The proposed amendments, be sides the one which would increase the length of legislator's terms, would: No. 2 -- authorize the General Assembly to provide for recall of retired Supreme Court justices and Court of Appeals judge* ?to serve temporarily , on either court; No. 3 give the Supreme Court authority to review, when authorized by law, direct appeals from the N.C. Utilities ^ Commission; No. 4 -- permit the * General Assembly to grant proper public bodies additional powers to develop new and existing seaports and airports, including powers to finance and refinance for public and private parties seaport and airport and related commercial, industrial and other facilities and improvements; and No. 5 -- permit the General Assembly to enact general laws to authorize the state, I or any state entity to issue revenue bonds to finance or refinance the cost of acquiring, constructing and financing higher education facili ties for any nonprofit private corporation. Hoke County Coroner Frank Crumpler and Clerk of Superior Court Juanita Edmund are running for reelection this year; but since neither had opposition in the Democratic primary and have none ^ for the November general election, they are automatically getting new four-year terms. The Space Ship Columbia blast off into space again Sunday and this time it was on schedule. No delays or false starts. This only goes to prove that experience is the best teacher. * ? * Someone said today that they believed that the price of gasoline had reached its peak after going up approximately 13 cents. I can't get it in my mind yet that this is true. Why <ii4 the gasoline prioet go up this summer when everyone says that there is an oil glut in the world. The people that control the price of gas knows that we will travel this summer and don't forget they will milk us for every penny they can. When the profits of an oil company are over a billion dollars and they say it isn'l enough, then look out gas users. ? * * I have just returned from the polling place and it is the first time at 6:30 in the morning that I have stood in line. Usually my ballot is the first cast in Precinct Number One in Raet'ord. So maybe my prediction on the voting will be correct. * * ? The 5th Annual American Legion Golf tournament will be held Monday.
