Blazers Take League Title There were two more victories for the Hoke Blazers this past weekend to give them undisputed first place in the Carolina Tri-County League for the 1982 season. On the year it was a season record of 18 wins and only 6 losses for the semi-pro boys -- "Quite an accomplishment for a team just organized this year," commented Jimmie Conoly, manager, following a tense weekend of play against St. Pauls and Lumber Bridge teams. Conoly further expressed his grati tude for the fans and especially for those who helped to sponsor the infant organization with funds and with other help. Saturday the Blazers defeated the St. Pauls Hawks 6-S, in a tight game, going 10 innings at St. Pauls. Pitcher Cromarti for the Hawks struck out 18 in his bid for victory. But the Blazers made the most of their hits and their strategy and led 1 -0. then 4- 1 before a Hawks homer in the eighth inning took the lead away. A Blazer run in the ninth tied and another in the tenth iced it. Bruce Cobb and Tim Clark had the big sticks with doubles. Mike Nieves and Mark Madden led the day. both going three for five at bats. Orlando Fairly started as pitcher and went seven innings before giving way to Raschad Rachmaan. who received the win. Sunday afternoon's game was more than a scratch afternoon for the home boys as they faced the Lumber Bridge All-Stars. Playing at home, the blazers were facing their arch-rivals who had twice before beaten them -? and the only team this year to do so. At the end. it was Blazers 9, Lumber Bridge 4. Rachmaan won this game as pitcher also, for a double-header weekend for him self. He fanned eight Hawk players while his opponent Johnson, pitch ing for the Hawks, also fanned eight Blazers. The teams each got a run in .the second inning, then the Blazers capitalized on unearned runs to go out to a 5-1 lead by the end of the fifth. Three tallies by the Hawks in the sixth brought in to a 5-4 score. Tight control pitching by Rach maan and a smart defensive play by catcher Bruce Hurst kept the game at the tension level until the eighth when Cecil Blake powered a three run homer.
