Violence on children's television shows? If you have any doubt about it, just sit down and watch the cartoons any Saturday morning. There you'll find a steady diet of beatings, shootings, stabbings. and other assorted acts of mayhem. The kids seem to thrive on it. It's enough to make one long for those idyllic days before television, when children sat at their parents' feet and listened to ageless stories, like the classic fairy tales I grew up with. I remember, for instance, the charming tale of Hansel and Gretel. whose parents took them deep into the woods and left them there to starve or be torn apart by the animals. Remember how the quaint old witch held them prisoner in her gingerbread cottage, fat tening Hansel up so she could roast him alive and make a meal of him? But. ha. ha. ha. These clever children burned the witch to death in her own oven! Then there was the exciting story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. If 1 remember correctly, there were three fatal stabbings in the story. But the really spectacular part was where Morgiana, the faithful ser vant girl, killed 38 robbers by pouring boiling hot oil on them. Good enough for them! Everyone knows the story of Snow White, of course. A real children's classic made famous by Walt Disney. In that story, you will recall. Snow White's stepmother (actually a wicked old witch) was really a bad actor. Among other things, she ordered her huntsman to take the little girl into the forest and murder her. threatened to feed the huntsman to his own dogs, squeezed the breath out of Snow White by tightening her bodice laces, and gave her an apple filled with a terrible poison. Not quite so well known in our country is that little story from Czechoslovakia about "Stumpy." Stumpy was a little boy made from a stump who had a ravenous appetite. His appetite was so hearty, in fact, that he ate not onlv all the food in the house, but. also, his mother, and his father, and a dairymaid, and a farmer, along with his horse, wagon, and a load of hay. Oh. yes. he also gulped down a shepherd and his herd of sheep. (Sounds like a good plot for another Japanese horror movie, doesn't it?) Well, anyway, you get the point. Our children are exposed to so much violence nowadays, it would be nice if we could get back to the days of innocent entertainment, like those sweet little fairy tales.
