80 To 90 Candidates Expected
Football Practice To Start August 2
Football practice for the 1982
season for Hoke County High
School's varsity and junior varsity
players will start August 2. Head
Coach Tom Jones announced
Thursday.
He said all candidates for the
teams are to report to MacDonald
Gym that day at 5 p.m.
He also advised that all students
who want to play must have reports
from their family doctors or from
the Hoke County Health Depart
ment that they are physically tit to
play. He said the students must
pass the physical examinations
before they will be permitted to
participate in practice.
The 1982 varsity Bucks will open
their season August 27 in their
home stadium against Cape Fear
High School's squad. The kickoff is
scheduled for 8 p.m.
The Hoke JVs will open their
season August 26. starting at 7:30
p.m.. against the Cape Fear JVs on
the Cape Fear gridiron.
Before then, the squads will
scrimmage the Pine Forest High
School squads at 8 p.m. August 19

welcome to watch the practice
sessions, he added.
Jones said each player should
bring with him August 2 football or
tennis shoes, the latter to be worn
in case of rain; shorts, a T-shirt,
practice socks, and a towel.
Jones also said the young men
who plan to play this season should
report August 2 in good physical
shape. He added that they already
should be doing some running to
become accustomed to the heat,
and get in shape because the
practice is strenuous.
"It's important to be here on
time." he added, referring to the
llrst practice.
Jones said that after the first day.
practice will start about 6 p.m. and
will be held every day of the week
except Sunday.
He said the first week the players
will go through physical con
ditioning only, in shorts. Practice
in pads will start the second week,
he added.
The varsity and the JVs are
coached by the same staff.
The candidates for the freshman
squad arc scheduled to start prac
tice the first day of school the new
year - September 1 .
The junior varsity games will be
played Thursday nights and the
varsity games Friday nights. The
JVs will play the junior varsity of
the same opponents the varsity will
play in a particular week except the
JV games will be played on an
opposite field. The JV games will
start at 7:.W p.m.. and the varsity
games at 8 p.m.

defeated Ephesus A's 14-4. A.
Monroe with a three run homer and

were the heroes for the All Stars.

Davis 2-3. and R. Home 2-3 were
the leading batters tor Ephesus A's.
In the second game, Beasley's
downed Raeford Merchants 13-6.
M. Sutton with two home runs, and
R. Edward blasted a three run
homer to lead Beaslev's to victory.
E. Ramsey 2-3. CM. McDuffie
1-3. and A. Posey 1-3 were the
leading hitters tor the Merchants.
The final game of the regular
season matched Hard & Heavy
against Jones Intercable. Hard Sc
Heavy upset Jones by the score ot
21-7. C. Chandler with a three run
homer. R. McRae with a three run
homer, and V. McDougald with a
three run homer were leading
batters for Hard & Heavy. Jones
Intertable was led by D. McNeill
4-4 with two home runs, and W.

Men's Arm Wrestling Championship at Gibson Gym at Hoke
High on Wednesday at 8 p.m. The registration blank follows
and has to be returned to the Parks and Recreation office prior
to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 21. The contest will be a double ?
elimination tourney with the following weight divisions:
Right Handed: 0-135, 136-150, 151-165, 166-185, 186-200,
