Byrd. 15P "Things That Matter" by L.'icien Coleman Confused by all the conflicting reports coming out of Knoxville. my wife and 1 thought we would just go see the 1982 World's Fair for ourselves. So, here, friends, is an up-to-date eye-witness account, along with some tips for those of you who are still thinking about making the trip. First, let me say that the lines ot people weren't as bad as we had been told. They were worse. If you go to the fair, be prepared to stand in line. We stood in line to get into the gate. We stood in line to get out of the gate. We stood in line to see the exhibits, to get food, to go to the restrooms. But there's another side to this. One of the best parts of the fair was the socializing we did while waiting in line. Met all kinds of interesting people that way. And we were pleasantly surprised at how fast some of the lines moved. When we went to the U.S. exhibit, we were appalled by the length of the line. But it only took about 45 mintues to get in. In contrast, the line at the Chinese pavillion was awesome all the time we were at the lair. One morning the line there was a half-mile long 30 minutes before the exhibit opened. It helps if you plan to see some ot the more popular exhibits late in the day. The crowds tend to start thinning out in the evening. On the other hand, if you're thinking about beating the crowds to the gate in the morning, forget it. Everyone else will have thought ot that, too. Whatever else you see. be sure to take in the Imax Theatre at the U.S. pavillion. the Federal Express multi-media show (including a fascinating laser show), and the film at the Japanese exhibit. (For the latter, you'll need to get your arm stamped with a time early in the day; then you return for the film at the appointed time.) The picture-painting robot in the Jap panese exhibit is worth seeing, too. You can spend a lot of time in the "Lifestyle and Technology" Building. You'll want to see the hand-carved miniature circus, the musical performances at the Ten nessee pavillion. and the impressive inter-denominational show called "Power." Another good religious exhibit is the Southern Baptist pavillion. with multi-media shows and musical performances through the day. The short-order foods were good and reasonably priced. Wt recom mend the barbecue sandwiches and ? the strawberry-topped Belgian wat tles near the Elm Tree Theatre. By the way. a map of the fair grounds is an indispensable tool.
