Pilkington-Kirkley Couple
Exchanges Wedding Vows
The wedding vows of Lynda Gay
Kirkley and Thomas Pilkington
were exchanged on Sunday, July
25, 1982, at 3:00 p.m. in the
Raeford First Baptist Church with
the Rev. Billy C. Beaver officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. James A. Kirkley of
Raeford and the groom is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Luther Pilkington of
Smithfield.
A program of wedding music was
presented by Mrs. Ollie Pilkington,
of Smithfield, pianist, and Charles
Pilkington of Smithfield and Miss
Alice Lancaster of Raeford were the
vocalists. Selections included
"Evergreen," "Til the End of
Time," and "Whither Thou
Goest." Mrs. Mary Graham
directed the wedding.
Forming the setting for the
double-ring ceremony were two
seven-branched candelabra covered
with babies breath and greenery.
The altar arrangement included
gladioli, snowballs, daisies, and
greenery. There were also two fern
arrangements in tall, white wicker
baskets.
Given in marriage by her father,
the bride wore a gown of satin
trimmed in lace and ribbon
fashioned with a square neckline,
long sleeves trimmed in lace, with a
sash in the back. Her headpiece
was a band of daisies. She carried a
summer bouquet consisting of
daisies, yellow roses, yellow bells
and white ribbons.
Donna Rountree Melvin of
White Oak served as matron of
honor. She was attired in a long
gown of yellow dotted swiss featur
ing a square neckline and short
sleeves. She carried a miniature
summer bouquet of daisies and
white ribbons.
Jordana Pilkington. of Danville,
Va., bridesmaid, was attired
identically to the matron of honor
and also carried a miniature sum
mer bouquet of daisies and white
ribbon.
Dennis Holloway of Lum
berton, served as best man. Ushers
were Edison Glover of Cary and
J9nathan Pilkington of Danville,
Virginia.
The mothers of the bridal couple
each wore a rose corsage. The
grandmothers of the bridal couple
wore rose corsages also.
After a wedding trip to Charles
ton, S.C. the couple will be at home
on 401 Bypass, Raeford.
The bride is a graduate of
Pembroke State University with a
BS degree in Home Economics. She
is presently employed with the
Cumberland County School Sys
tem. The bridegroom is employed
by the North Carolina Wildlife
Resource Commission as an En
forcement Officer.
RECEPTION
The parents of the bride enter
tained with a reception in the
fellowship hall of the church im
mediately following the ceremony.
Punch was poured by Cathy
James of Raeford, and cake was
served by Debbie Cole of Wake
field, Virginia and Hope Williams
of Raeford. Sheila Black also
assisted with the reception. The
bride's register was kept by Mrs.
Angela Glover, sister of the bride.
Couple Honored
With Patio Party
Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Black
Parker recently honored Beth Gillis
and David Willis with a patio party
at their home in the Galatia
Community. They were assisted in
serving by their children; Joni,
Teresa and Duncan Parker.
Upon arrival the twenty-four
guests were served frosty punch and
a variety of chips, dips and nuts.
The patio and lawn were sur
rounded by torches which illumi
nated the gingham - covered tables
in the dining area. Fairy lamps and
small baskets filled with blueberry
muffins adorned the tables. The
focal point of the buffet table was a
large basket which held home
made rolls. The table was laden
with grilled chicken, corn-on-the
cob, baked beans, sauerkraut
salad, iced tea and apple pie.
The hosts presented Beth with a
corsage and gave the bridal couple
a multi-purpose microwave cooking
utensil.

State Pageant'"
Plans Announced
A new kind of pageant is coming
to North Carolina. After being very
successful in New York. New
England, Ohio and Pennsylvania a
preliminary to "Pageant of the
States" will be held here. Called
Miss Tarheel State Pageant - it will
be held November 12. 13, & 14 at
the beautiful Velvet Goak Inn, in
Raleigh. It is open to any single girl
15-21 years of age, who lives in or
attends school in North Carolina
and interested in a career as model,
actress or airline stewardess. Semi
nars in each career field will be held
- by top people in that field. Each
girl will spend three days at the
Velvet Cloak Inn - participate in
the seminars and the pageant - and
prizes include a S2100 acting
scholarship; a trip to New York
City to meet top modeling agencies;
a round trip flight to Miami to be
VIP guest at Eastern Airlines
Stewardess Training School; $500
cash, and much more. No more
than 52 girls will be accepted from
all over North Carolina. Interested

The Hoke County Child Abuse
Team met on July 28 to elect
officers, discuss goals and plan
strategy for the next year.

rious agencies and groups who have
an interest in the children of Hoke
County. The members include Ken
