"Things That
Matter"
by Lucien Coleman
I REMEMBER WHEN
I COULD REMEMBER
I must be in that stage of life
where the years get shorter,
muscles get softer, and remem
bering gets harder.
Just the other day I looked all
over the house for my bifocals
before it dawned on me that 1 was
wearing them. And, so help me, 1
fcan lose a paper I was reading just
before the phone rang without ever
getting up from my desk.
What's even more embarrassing
is the habit of forgetting names that
I know very well. For instance, I
have a daughter whose name is
Lynette and a granddaughter
named Joy Beth. For some reason,
I persist in calling Lynette by my
granddaughter's name. And I've
known my daughter for ... uh, let's
see ... something like 23 years. I
think.
Then, there are those occasions
when I ask someone if he knows
one of my very best friends, and go
completely blank when I try to
recall my very best friend's name.
I tell my wife that these symp
toms are a sure sign that I'm
overworked. She insists that they
are more like sure signs I'm over
the hill. She's wrong, of course, I'd
argue the point with her more if I
could ever think of the arguments 1
had planned to use.
Besides, faulty memory isn't
necessarily a result of aging. Plenty
of older people have memories clear
as a bell. I remember, for example,
the story of a Cherokee Indian up
iin the Smoky Mountains of North
Carolina. Even though he was
getting up in years, he was known
far and wide as a man with a
fantastic memory.
One day a tourist from up east
decided to test the old man's
memory. "What did you have for
breakfast yesterday morning?", he
asked.
"Eggs." the elderly Indian shot
back without a moment's hesi
3 tation.
The tourist went on his way. But
five years later he came back that
way again and found the old Indian
sitting where he had last seen him.
"How!", the tourist said, using
the Indian greeting he had learned
from western movies.
I Scrambled," the old man said.
You see, I remembered that story
without any trouble, just as it was
told to me by ... ah ... don't tell me.
I'll think of it in a minute.
Well, anyway, as I was saying
earlier, the price of herring in
Amsterdam this year is ....
