Literacy Observance Activities Planned The United Nations has declared that September 8 be observed throughout the earth as "Interna tional Literacy Day." Hoke Reading/Literacy Council as a member of Laubach Literacy International, Laubach Literacy Action, North Carolina Literacy Association and Inter-County Literacy Association, will join others around the earth in this observation. "The local council sees this observation as a time to evaluate our efforts, to publicize our needs and pay tribute to those who have done outstanding jobs as student, tutor, leader and donor," said project director Barbara Buie in making the announcement. The local council will also ob serve "Literacy Weekend" on Sat urday and Sunday, September 11, and 12. Saturday's activities will be held in Edinborough Shopping Center 1 p.m.-6 p.m. There will also be a door-to-door canvass held on Sat urday asking every adult in Hoke County to give at least $1 to literacy. Sunday's activities will be held in Hoke Public Library. The public is urged to attend. For more information, telephone 875-2145. Willie Featherstone and Harold Gillis are co-chairmen of "Literacy Weekend." Mrs. Nellie Flowers is chairman of "$ for Literacy." Service Personnel Sgt. Robert A. Rucker, grand son of Booker T. and Maggie C. Rucker of Rt. 3, Red Springs, has arrived for duty at Camp Casey, South Korea. Rucker, a communications system operator with the 2nd In fantry Division, was previously assigned in Bad Kreuznach, West Germany. Staff Sgt. William H. Graham, son of Edna L. Graham of Rt. 1, Shannon, has been decorated with the Air Force Achievement Medal at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.
