Warren Johnston at his desk in The News-Journal office. Warren Johnston Joins N-J Staff Warren N. Johnston has joined Bill Lindau on the news staff of The News-Journal as news editor. ^ Mr. Johnston is a graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens and worked for several years in real estate and related fields before joining The Georgetown Times in Georgetown, South Carolina, as a general assignment reporter. While at the Georgetown newspaper he, along with his news team, received several awards from the South Carolina Press Association. In 1980 Mr. Johnston became editor of The Pawleys Island Perspective, a monthly general interest magazine, and most recently served as news editor of The Marlboro Herald' Advocate in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Married to the former Sandra Gaines of Spartanburg, Mr. John ston is himself a native of Atlanta. While in Bennettsville, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club and attended the Presbyterian church. The Johnstons are making their home on Roberts Street in Raeford. Roekfish News by Polly Barnard Mrs. Martin L. Wood, Sr. and Mrs. Ethel Monroe and other friends in Raeford attended a ^incheon given by Mrs. Mary Anna ^icLean at her home the past Thursday noon. The Extension Homemakers Gub met Tuesday, August 24th at 11:30 o'clock at Aaron South Restaurant with eight members and one visitor present. Mrs. Mary Benkosky, Club President, called a brief business meeting that was followed by a luncheon. The mem bers extended a warm welcome to 04rs. Ethel Monroe who had been absent for some time due to an extended illness. Miss Nellie Mc Fadyen received the door prize. Everyone had a very enjoyable time. Mrs. Robert Dey and children, Bobbie and Nicole of Fayetteville visited Mr, and Mrs. Lawrence Barnard Tuesday of last week. Mrs. Lawrence Barnard visited Qier sister, Mrs. Gordon Barnard and family and brother, Mr. Buie Dove and family in Cheraw, South Carolina for a couple of days last week. On her return trip home she visited Mr. and Mrs. James C. Huggins and Mrs. Luther M. Huggins, Sr. of near Red Springs. Jason and Joel King of Washing ton, North Carolina have returned home after spending several enjoy Vrus Caused Child's Death The death of a 6-year-old girl July 26 was caused by a virus infection of heart muscle, an 0iutopsy has found. Dr. Ramnik Zota, a Hoke County medical examiner, quoted the report sent him by the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill. The autopsy was performed by the state staff. The report called the infection viral mycarditis. Zota said the infection is not contagious. The child, Kersha Michelle Brown of Rt. 1, Raeford, was dead W>n arrival at Zota's office the morning of July 26. She had become ill suddenly at her home, the doctor said. She was the daughter of Joshua Brown of Charlotte and Mrs. Linda Brown of the home. Sympathy is extended to the family of Mrs. Annie McBryde McNeil who died Sunday, August 22nd. Funeral was held Tuesday morning, August 24th at Antioch Presbyterian Church. Sympathy is also extended to the family of David Livingston who died Friday, August 20th. Funeral was held Sunday afternoon, August 22nd in Westside Baptist Church in Red Springs. Mrs. Leila Barefoot of Stoney Point Road had eye surgery Mon day, August 23 and returned to Denton, North Carolina to recu perate. Miss Lisa Dove of Cheraw, South Carolina visited Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Barnard the past Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. David Gibson visited Mr. and Mrs. James Clark of Columbia, South Carolina the past weekend. Mrs. Marie Fowler spent the past week with her brother, Allen Gibson in Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Gibson, Jr., visited Mr. and Mrs. Danny Gib son and family in Raeford the past Sunday. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Danny Gibson on their new son, William Matthew. Mrs. Alton McCulloch is still hospitalized at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. Mrs. Richard McMahon of the Davis's Bridge area visited Mrs. Alton McCulloch in Cape Fear Valley Hospital Saturday after noon. Mrs. Lawrence Barnard also visited Mrs. Alton McCulloch Sat urday. HurTy and get well Jane!! Mrs. Lawrence Barnard visited Mrs. Maxey Dove, Jr., of Hope Mils Friday afternoon of last week. Mrs. Henrietta Tanner spent the past week with Mrs. Minnie Out law and Mrs. Helen Ammons in Roxboro. Mr. David Gibson and sister, Mrs. Alice Allen visited Mr. and Mrs. Percy Griffin in Pittsboro, North Carolina the past Saturday. Mr. Griffin was home after being hospitalized recently in Chapel Hill for treatment. College News Kevin Markham of Raeford, now starting his sophomore year at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, has been chosen be cause of his outstanding academic achievement as a freshman the past year for membership in Phi Eta Sigma. His mother, Mrs. Sally Mark ham of 133 Chilton Dr., Raeford, was notified of her son's selection by W. Lee Johnston, UNC-W faculty advisor, by letter dated August 24. His father is Terry Markham of Alliance, O., retired from the Navy. Markham and other members of his initiation class will be honored by the University at a banquet at 6 p.m. October 2. , A freshman must maintain an average of at least 3.5 of a possible 4.0 to be eligible for membership in Phi Eta Sigma. Markham is majoring in marine biology. He is a 1981 graduate oi Hoke County High Schoorand was valedictorian of his graduating class.
