Mental Mistakes Make Buck Win Tougher Mental discipline is the key to future victories for the Hoke High Bucks, Head Coach Tom Jones said Tuesday. If the Bucks' offense had had better discipline and not made "mental mistakes," three touch downs scored against South View last Friday night might not have been called back, Jones said. As it was, the Bucks were still able to earn a victory over the Tigers, but it took a freak play and a closing minutes pressure field goal to garner the 9-6 win. Although Jones feels the offense is progressing and played better Friday than they did a week ago against Cape Fear, the coach is hoping to eliminate the costly mistakes before the Bucks take the field against 71st here this Friday. Seventy-First has two of the state's top offensive players, and Jones hopes to keep them off of the field by playing ball control foot ball. "Our best defense is going to be keep our offense on the field," Jones said. Tailback Greg Williams and flanker Tim Medley are ranked as two of the top 50 players in the state, and the Bucks would just as soon keep their hands off of the ball. The Bucks were able to capture their first victory in almost a year last Friday after a strange play. Trailing 6-0, Buck quarterback John McDuffy tossed an inter ception to a South View player at midfield, who fumbled the ball. Another Tiger player picked up the loose ball on the 48 yard line and raced for the end zone. The only problem was that he ran the wrong way, crossed the Buck goal line and placed the ball on the ground to a victory dance. Alertly, Olando McKinnon turned the miscue into a Hoke touchdown by falling on the loose ball. Although kicker Michael Bethea missed the point after, he came back and with 5:17 remaining in the contest, booted a 25 yard field goal to seal the game. The Buck defense played well during the South View game, Jones said, noting that after the Tigers initial two possessions, the Hoke boys kept the opposing team to a total offense of about 50 yards. South View rushed for only 54 yards during the game and passed for another 39 yards. The Bucks rushed for 143 yards and picked up 40 yards in the air. Twelve penalities for 99 yards didn't help the Buck cause either. In the first two games of the season, the Bucks have had four touchdowns called back and if things had been different, would now be 2-0 on the season. However, they face 71st with a 1-1 record and high hopes for the future. Hoke High Runners Win SC10K Event Hoke High's Paul Hunt and Upchurch's Allen R. Then they took their characters into elementary schools in an effort to bring "Living History" to the students. This is the second time Miss Jones has received the assistant ship. Last fall she chose the character Miss Jane Pittman to take to the schools and was cast in the spring production of "Skin of Our Teeth". She is a senior majoring in theatre. IUKECAUJNG CAROUNA
