Read Matthew 25:31-46 Dwight Eisenhower once said, "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed." The United Nations estimates the annual world expen diture on armaments at 200 billion dollars. Arthur Simon, executive director of Bread for the World, maintains that 300 billion dollars is more accurate. The annual cost for ending world illiteracy in a five-year program would be 1.6 billion dollars; the annual cost for supplying basic maternal health and family plan ning services, 2 billion dollars; the investment needed for poor nations to meet food production targets, 4.5 billion. Comparing these amounts to military spending shows how distorted our priorities are. We can achieve what Jesus called us to: justice for "the least of these." Jesus came to bring the poor good news, to set captives free, give .sight to the blind, and heal the ? afflicted. Those who follow Him are called and empowered to do the same. PRAYER: Keep me sensitive. Lord, to a hungry world suffering from war, a raging injustice. Strengthen my will to use the resources You have given to show my concern for all the people of the world. Amen. Oyster Festival Set For Oct. 8-10 The Second Annual North Caro lina Oyster Festival will be held in the South Brunswick Islands Octo ber 8-10. Participants are asked to bring their own oyster knives. } The N.C. State Oyster Shucking Contest will be held in conjunction with the oyster roast. The winner will have the opportunity to travel to St. Mary's County in Maryland to compete in the National Oyster Shucking Championships. An arts and crafts show, and live musical entertainment will be pro vided for throughout the oyster roast and tish fry. P Prior to the oyster roast on October 9. a parade will be held at 10:00 a.m. in downtown Shallotte. Following the oyster roast, the N.C. At 9:00 p.m. on October 9 a street dance will be held in Cala ^bash. Admission to the street dance 'is free. However, tickets must be acquired at the oyster roast and fish fry site. No food purchase is necessary. At 10:00 a.m. on October 9, fun runs and a marathon run will be held on Holden Beach. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of age group competitions. Entry forms and a nominal entry fee are ? required. From 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on October 10. bike races will be held on Sunset Beach. And at 3.00 p.m. a raft race down the Shallotte River will begin. The starting point for the raft race will be at the end of Wall Street in Shallotte. Entry forms and nominal entry fees are required for both events. According to Patrick Dowling, ?executive vice president of the South Brunswick Islands Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of the festival, visitors from many states attend the festival. "Their primary objective is to consume as many oysters as is humanly possible," Dowling said, "but they also come for the genuine spirit of comaraderie that pervades the festival. These are people who ?enjoy fall's cooler temperatures, and who like the idea of uncrowded beaches. The festival also repre sents an opportunity for local residents and businesspeople to mingle with our visitors and to enjoy themselves after a pressure filled summer season." For further N.C. Oyster Festival information and events entry forms, contact the South Bruns wick Islands Chamber of Com femerce, P.O. Box 784. Shallotte, N.C. 28459. * BUYING * SELLING ? TRADING ? I dismissed this "odd feeling" until much later in our conversation a chance remark he made led us both to realize that we had met perhaps ten or more years ago under very different circum stances in a little New England town . At that time 1 was visiting a facility for delinquent and troubled youth and Allen was a "graduate" of the program who decided to stay on to help as a lay therapist, working with teenagers who, like himself, had considerable emo tional problems and had been in some kind of difficulties with the law. 1 remember looking at Allen and wondering just how rehabili tated he was. In his eyes there was still a lot of that cunning that had made him such a despair to his parents and community. And then I forgot Alien and he forgot me...until yesterday's chance meeting. (Was it really "chance"? As I left the house to keep an appointment I was sur prised I had made, if Valere had asked me. "You aren't really interested in that proposal, why are you going?" I couldn't have satis factorily answered her. Was it the hand of God prodding me that led me to say "yes. I'll come?") Yesterday afternoon when at last Allen and I recognized each other. I couldn't help but wonder to myself: "Is he really as different as he appears?" Around the eyes and the mouth there seemed to linger some flickering traces of the old Allen. Yet. it was obvious that he was a vastly different Allen than the delinquent teenager who had been sent East by his desperate parents. It is this same paradox that always strikes me when I read the story of Jacob. Obviously a rascal in the deepest sense -- a person of both charm and cunning who uses and manipulates people to get what he wants --Jacob nevertheless re turned to his homeland many years later as a man who had changed so much that God would give him a new name. The Jacob/Israel who returned to his homeland, however, was not just a new person in a familiar body, but the same personality that had been transformed by his encounters with God. The new Israel still had the old Jacob's charm, sly intelligence and "take charge" assertiveness. He was still as skillful as ever with his persua sive use of words. The essential ingredients of the old Jacob were still in the new Israel. What made the old scoundrel a new patriarch was the driving force behind all those personal attributes and character traits. God took what Jacob gave him of himself and re-directed it in a new direction and for a new purpose. And what he did in making Jacob Israel, he can do with you. a: FOR SALE Honda 550 motorcycle, excellent cond. $1000.
