Soccer is in full swing at Flora Date Macdonald Academy. 09-14 Coaches Robert McKethan and ' 09-16 vMarlene Johnson are anticipating a 09-20 good season following their First 09-21 victory over Waccamaw Academy 09-23 on September 10. "We need about six more teams to make this a great competition," according to Games spokesman Tommy Ammons. "The tug-of-war was a great crowd-pleaser last year and we would like to involve some more departments." Smithson Beverage Company is co-sponsoring the tug-of-war this year, and that means prizes to the winners, according to Ammons. "Miller Beer is putting up some great incentives to participate," added Ammons. "We would like to hear from some more pullers." To sign up for the tug-of-war, call the Games office at 843-4139. Local runners are also being sought to enter the Flora Mac donald Highland Games 10,000 meter run set for Sunday, Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m. here. The race is sanctioned by the North Carolina Association of the Athletic Congress of the United States and will feature trophies for the winners and T-shirts for all participants. Last year, more than 65 runners took part in the race, the final event of the Games which drew nearly 5.000 spectators in 1981. For more information or to enter, call the Games office at 843-4239. Service Personnel Army Staff Sgt. Donald R. Youmans. whose wife, Bragail, is the daughter of Jakie W. and Georgianna Snapp of Raeford, N.C., has been awarded the Sol dier's Medal at Fort Bragg. N.C. The soldier's Medal is awarded only for non-combat act of heroism. The act must have in volved personal hazard or danger and have been accomplished at the risk of the soldier's own life. Youmans is an infantryman with the 1st Battalion. 504th Infantry. Competency Test October 5-6 The North Carolina State Com petency Test will be given October 5-6 at 8:30 a.m. each day at Hoke County High School. Any student who has received a graduation certificate can take the test, and if he or she passes, will receive a diploma. Students interested can obtain more information from Sharmaine Butler at 875-2156. State Fair Is Bargain While inflation has eaten away at the pockets of most North Carolina Citizens, the 1982 North Carolina State Fair is still the best entertain ment bargain around, particularly if fairgoers plan ahead. Reduced prices for rides and gate admission are available for those planning to attend October 15-23 in Raleigh. Coupon booklets and admission tickets discounts are available at any North Carolina Winn-Dixie store from September 12 through October 9, says Art Pitzer, fair manager. In addition a special ride ticket booklet which retails for $7.50 but is being sold for $5, fairgoers can purchase a regular S3 admission ticket for $2.50. The ride ticket booklets will allow the purchaser to enjoy 12 rides for S5. a savings of about S2.50. Ride books or admission tickets can be purchased separately. In addition to Winn-Dixie as an advance ticket outlet, advance tickets will also be on sale October 1-14, 1982 at the Administration Building on the State Fairgrounds, 1025 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27607. The phone number is (919) 821-7400. Ticket office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking for the State Fair is free on State Fair and Carter Stadium parking lots. Senior citizens, 65 years of age or older, will be admitted free as will children 12 and under. No refunds will be made on advance sale tickets. Community Methodist Homecoming Sunday Homecoming will be held Sunday at Community United Methodist Church in the Five Points Com munity, with the Rev. Wallace M. Ellis guest speaker. He is pastor of Bethany United Methodist Church of Durham. Sunday school will be held at 9:45 a.m., and the preaching service at 11 a.m. followed by dinner in the Fellowship Building. Everyone is invited. Ellis is a native of Hoke County, the son of H.W. Ellis and the late Mrs. Ellis, who was one of the founders of the church. A revival for the week will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and continue through September 30 with the Rev. Berry Barbour of Durham guest speaker. Barbour is a former pastor of Sandy Grove and Parker's United Methodist Churches. The forest to every creature.
