Child Care Food Program Renewed Head Start enrollees in Hoke County will again have the op portunity to participate in the Child Care Food Program during the 1982-83 program year. The program is being sponsored by Four-County Community Ser vice*, Inc. under an agreement with the Division of Child Nutrition of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Meals will be available to chil dren who are enrolled in Head Start centers and who meet eligibility requirements, without regard to race, color, national origin, sex or handicap. The sponsoring agency operates centers at the Hoke Head Start Center one and two on Turnpike Road in Raeford. BLOOMED 3 TIMES ?? A night-blooming Cereus usually blooms one night in a summer, then doesn t bloom again till the next year when new blossoms come out. But Mrs. Nell Hawkes of Rockfish has one that gives encores. The three buds on her Cereus have opened up three nights so far this summer in two months. The last time was on September 10. She's had this Cereus five years now. and before this summer it bloomed one night a year, just typical Cereuses. The Cereus blossoms come out at about midnight and stay out for about six hours, then close up again. MEMORIAL GIVING - These are among the people who gave a total of 74 units of blood September IS in memory of Lawrence Bounds, who was confined to a wheelchair but was active in civic affairs till his death in August. The Bloodmobile program was sponsored by the House of Raeford. A total of 120 people volunteered to donate, and 44 were deferred. Missionary Union Holds Annual Session * The Hoke County Missionary Union had its Annual Session at Buffalo Springs Baptist Church. Rev. James Kelly is pastor. Music was by Laurel Hill Baptist Church Senior Choir and Shady Grove, Wagram. All six churches of the union were represented. Nest came the president's annual address by Sister Annie McKinnon; president of the Hoke County Missionary Union. She stated that we need to make a deeper commitment and get involved in God's business and enlightened in His word. She said that our churches today are airconditioned and so are our spirits. She aslo said that the people today are more overjoyed about "You ain't nothing but a hounddog" than "Amazing Grace." Next was the Historian's report by Sister Kathryn McPhatter. It was enjoyed by all. The next session will be held at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Rev. C.L. Bethea is pastor. August Sales Tax Down From July | The state Department of Reve nue announced Monday that over S31,000 in state sales tax was collected in Hoke County during August.
