Gifts: Seeing Braves Play, Meeting Pitcher Steven Lentz of Raeford got a trip to Atlanta and saw the Atlanta Braves play, and got his picture taken with Atlanta pitcher Phil Niekro as presents for his 13th birthday. It was Niekro who pitched Atlanta back into a first-place tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday by shutting out the San Francisco Giants at San Francisco, 7-0, giving up only two hits. Steven saw the Braves play September 10, 11 and 12 after his father, Bobby Lentz, took him on the trip. His birthday is September 15. Michael Caulder, a Raeford friend of Steven, shared the picture gift and saw the games, posing with Niekro and Steven. The meeting with Niekro was arranged by Steven's aunt, Rita Picklesimer, who works in a base ball-related business in Atlanta. She is the sister of Steven's mother. Niekro, a news report published Sunday says, has won 15 games in 57 starts and has limited opponents to 3.91 runs earned on the average per game through Friday. Steven, who plays baseball among several sports, also is a Brave. He alternated at third base and pitching for the Braves of United Carolina Bank in the Hoke County Little League this summer and plans to play Tar Heel League baseball next summer. He's played in the Little League the past several seasons. He and his family live at 409 N.
