Tim 's teacher is Stephen Chason. 3 Join Flora Macdonald Faculty Three new faculty members have been added to the staff at Flora Macdonald Academy for the 1982 83 school year. They include Jan Wiggs, Robert McKethan, and Melynda Mclntyre Johnson. Wiggs is from Fayetteville and is teaching art to all grades. She received a BS degree from East Carolina University and has done graduate work at several universi ties including the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She taught in the Durham County Schools prior to coming to FMA. Mr. McKethan, also a Fayette ville resident, is the new coach and in addition to his coaching duties teaches science in Junior High. Mr. McKethan, who has worked in the Ft. Bragg Schools, was supervisor of the Health and Drug Abuse Prevention Program in Cumber land County Schools last year. He received his BS and MA degrees from Appalachian State University. Johnson, who is from Lum berton, is the new second grade teacher in the elementary school. After receiving a BA degree from Meredith College, she earned an MA degree from Pembroke State University and taught in the Robe son County Schools. Andrea Shaw Attends Leadership Conference Andrea Shaw attended the N.C. Leadership Seminar held in con junction with the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation, on June 4-6 at Belmont Abbey. Students joined together from all over the state to explore and understand America's Incentive System. The North Carolina Jaycees, an organization dedicated to the idea of leadership training through com munity service, with the encourage ment of the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation, organized the two and one half day Seminar. At this Seminar, "Ambassadors" like Andrea, from Raeford, learned how to utilize their leadership abilities by sharing their knowl edge, enthusiasm, and youthful energy with the community. Next year, the Foundation will continue holding seminars in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition, the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation sponsored an International Leadership Seminar in Chicago, August 7th- 14th. Two high school sophomores, one boy and one girl, from each state, participated along with 19 foreign students from 15 countries. Hugh O'Brian, founder of the Youth Foundation, stated: "Our future, good or bad, rests in the hands of our young people, and success depends on strong and compassionate leadership that only they will be able to provide." Smith Awarded Meritorious Mast Marine Sgt. Arol H. Smith Jr., son of Magdalene and Arol H. Smith Sr. of Route 2, Box 246A, Raeford, N.C., has been awarded a Meritorious Mast and was recently selected as the Recruiter of the Month, while serving with Marine Corps Recruiting Sub-station. Fay etteville, N.C. A Meritorious Mast is official recognition from a Marine's com manding officer for superior in dividual performance. It is issued in the form of a bulletin published throughout the command, and a copy is entered in the Marine's permanent service records. He was chosen as the Recruiter of the Month from among all the enlisted personnel assigned to the command, and was cited for his outstanding performance of duty, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing. mt GiilLil I f Andrea Shaw Home Named Outstanding Post Soldier Pfc. David W. Home Jr., son of retired Army Sgt. Maj. David and Eva Home of Route 3, Raeford, N.C., has been named outstanding post soldier of the quarter at Fort Carson, Colo. The soldier was picked from a select group of peers who were judged on military bearing and knowledge, professional skill and exemplary behavior. His wife, Pamela, is the daughter of retired Army Chief Warrant Officer Donald E. and Jean Long of Georgetown. Texas. G. Smith Assigned To Chanute AFB Airman Gregory A. Smith, son of Patricia L. Blue of Rt. 1. Lumber Bridge, has been assigned to Chanute Air Force Base. 111., after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks at Lackland Air Force Base. Texas, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and re ceived special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who com plete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Com munity College of the Air Force. The airman will now receive specialized instruction in the air craft maintenance field. Smith is a 1982 graduate of Parkton High School. % fett* RE-ELECT ALTON V. Melyntfa Mclntyre Johnson and Jan Wiggs. 200 Jobs Cut At Ft. Bragg Some 200 temporary civil service employees at Fort Bragg lost their jobs at the end of September as the installation undertakes ac tion to meet its civilian employee end-strength as required by U.S. Army Forces Command. Notices were sent to all of the affected jobholders, most of whom occupy temporary clerical, trade and crafts positions. Under the terms of local federal hiring provisions, personnel work ing under a temporary employment agreement are subject to termina tion at any time* according to civilian personnel officials. The hiring agency is required to give seven calendar days advance notice that a temporary job is being terminated. Many of the almost 200 em ployees were already scheduled to Maynor Among REFORGER Troops Air Force Staff Sgt. Harry Maynor, son of Kitty Maynor of Route 1 , Shannon. N.C. was one of more than 100,000 U.S. soldiers and airmen participating in the U.S. Army REFQBGER?.or return of forces to Germany, and the U.S. Air Force Crested Cap exercises in Europe. U.S. service members in Europe, as well as those from the United States, join their NATO partners in ground exercises centering on cen tral West Germany east of the Rhine River. The joint exercises are designed to demonstrate U.S. capabilities to reinforce Europe with NATO-com mitted ground and air units in a crisis situation. Maynor is an instrument super visor with the 354th Tactical Fight er Wing at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, S.C. be terminated at the close of the 1982 Fiscal Year, as stated in the original terms of their employment. The effective date of this termination to meet end-strength was September 29. Beginning October 1 , Fort Bragg will have a Forces Command authorization for approximately 65 temporary appropriated fund posi tions, according to the spokesman. These positions will probably include a number of the people affected by the current cutback. The Fort Bragg commander has the discretion to hire temporary employees within prescribed limi tations, to meet the needs of the installation, as they arise. The total manpower authori zation for Forces Command ac tivities at Fort Bragg, including temporary and permanent posi tions. amounts to roughly 2,800 civil service employees. D.C. Smith Completes Basic Training Airman David C. Smith, son of Joe W. and Thelma M. Smith 101 Reeves St., Raeford, has completed Air Force basic training at Lack land Air Force Base, Texas. The airman, who is remaining at Lackland for specialized training in the Security police field, studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. Completion of this training earned the individual credits to ward an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force.
