These and several other spooky "spooktaculars" are displayed on the walls and bulletin boards of J.W. Turlington Elementary School. The attractive display is the creation by Sixth Grade Language Arts teacher Iris Barbour. Al though the display trickles with eye appeal and beauty, there are several very helpful messages in cluded as well. The children are told by such lovable monsters as Frankenstein to "Check All Goodies Before Eating" and to "Wear Bright Colors" on_Halloween night. The creepy creatures may fly and the gruesome ghosts may ride the sky, but at J.W. Turlington they'll all meet their match when they see the "The Slithery Dee" on the door of Sixth Grade teacher Beverly Bowden. This display was prepared to further enhance the spirit of Hallo ween for the boys and girls. "School Lunch: America's No. 1 Energy Source" is the 1982-1986 program theme developed by the American School Food Service Association that will be observed. Special emphasis for NSLW 1982 is "Eat Well, Your Body Can Tell!" Now more than ever, Americans are concerned about good nutrition and physical fitness. One way to be healthy is to develop healthy habits early in life since these habits will stay with children all of their lives. A school lunch is an excellent exam {5TiT oT g3ofl" n utHTToti. - The American School Food Ser vice Association along with local school food service staffs are pro moting proper nutrition since six out of ten leading causes of death are related to poor nutritional habits. Highlighting the week's activities will be a school lunch that includes colorful and taste-tempting oriental delights: oriental chicken, stir-fried vegetables, steamed rice, fruit fan tasy, Chinese almond cookie, and milk. This special menu will be served Thursday, Oct. 14. The meal represents a basic school lunch that includes items from the four basic food groups: meat or meat alterna tive, fruit and/or vegetables, bread or bread alternative, and milk. A school lunch also provides one third of the recommended daily allow ance for children. Scurlock School Open House Scurlock School will hold open house on Monday, October 1 1 at 7 p.m. Open house will begin with an opening assembly in the cafeteria. Raeford Mayor John K. Principal Gets Surprise Birthday Celebration Thursday, September 30, was principal George Wood's 55 birth day. A giant celebration was held for him at Scurlock school. All of the students, faculty and staff mem bers met on the school courtyard for the surprise celebration. A birthday cake and giant birthday card, both decorated in a golfer's theme, were presented to him from the faculty and staff. Many of the individual class rooms gave him gifts and cards made by students. Since some of the students thought Mr. Wood might enjoy "someone to keep him company," they presented him with a special friend, E.T. of the movie "E.T." Mr. Wood was told that E.T. would visit him for a little while - until he became homesick for his own home or another planet. The birthday celebration was concluded with everyone singing "Happy Birthday" to Mr. Wood and several others including chil dren and Mrs. Janet Plummer who were also having birthdays on the 30th. Special guests for the occasion were Raz Autry and Marilyn Semones. OCT.
