Something Worthwhile:
Being A 4-H Leader
by Alice L. Lancaster
Extension Agent, 4-H
Would you like to do something
really worthwhile? Would you like
to be involved in a program
dedicated to helping young people
become worthy citizens?
Volunteering to work with the
4-H program is an answer to all of
these questions, and it is for adults
as well as youth.
4-H is not just a "farm kids"
program, it is for everyone. 4-H
covers all areas of interest such as
aerospace, electric, forestry,
photography, foods, and many
others. You don't need to be an
expert in any of these fields to be a
leader, you just need to be someone
who will lend a helping hand or a
listening ear.
The main criteria of a 4-H leader
is a liking for and an understanding
of kids. There are dozens of ways
you can be a 4-H volunteer. With
work, home activities, and other
involvements, you may not feel you
have the time. However, you don't
have to make a life commitment.
You can volunteer a few hours a
month or a few days.
The list of things you can do is
endless. Share a skill related to
your profession or a hobby. You
can teach a small group any
subject, ranging from cooking to
needlecraft to bicycle safety.
You can volunteer to be a helper,
or work with a 4-H community club
which meets monthly, has officers,
and educational programs.
Regardless of whether you have
children of your own, working with
young people through 4-H brings
challenges and great satisfaction.
Find your place in the 4-H program
and make a commitment to help
youngsters develop to their highest
potential. For more information of
how you or your children can get
involved in 4-H, contact the 4-H
office at 875-2162.
4-H is Tor everyone!

President Issues
4-H Week Statement
President Ronald Reagan issued
the following statement from the
White House recently in reference
to the observance of National 4-H
Week being held through this
week.
I take great pleasure in extend
ing my congratulations and warm
personal regards to all those par
ticipating in National 4-H Week.
During the first week of October,
the five million young people in
4-H, their leaders, and professional
youth working across the nation
will celebrate this special occasion.
National 4-H Week brings de
served recognition to the over
seventy years of 4-H activities
encouraging leadership, good citi
zenship, and excellence by young
people involved in agriculture. The
ongoing success of this program is a
tribute to the thousands of volun
teers who help guide and support
the efforts of 4-H'ers across the
i
nation.
Your national theme for 1982,
"4-H - Pathways to the Future," is
especially timely and appropriate in
an era when the world has great
concern about future food pro
duction. The knowledge you
acquire in 4-H projects will help
America and other nations to deal
more effectively with the problems
of nutrition, health, and the con
servation of natural resources.
Our nation faces many critical
challenges in the period ahead,
problems that can most confidently
and successfully be addressed by
forward-looking young men and
women who possess the spirit of
voluntarism that has contributed so
much to our nation's progress. In
helping overcome obstacles to our
advancement, the 4-H program
furthers the goals of a stronger,
more vibrant American in the years
ahead.

National Fire Prevention
Week Here; Advice Is Given
i
Raeford Fire Chief Robert Jack
son advised Raeford home owners
to clear their roofs of leaves and
similar inflammable trash, and
have their chimneys cleaned before
lighting fires in their fire places or
stoves, and have their heating
systems checked.
He suggested these to eliminate
fire hazards, since the cold-weather
season has started.
This week also is National Fire
Prevention Week, and Jackson
suggested: "Let's make it all year
around."
He also reminded people that
they must get permits before they
can burn trash legally.
A permit is issued on days when
weather conditions are safe for
outdoor fires (no wind, for ex
ample).
An outdoor fire even with a
permit cannot be set within a
certain distance from a building.
