FISCAL YEAR 1982
The Hoke Soil and Water Conservation District is a Subdivision of State Government. It is responsible for the overall soil
and water conservation program in Hoke County and is governed by a board of Supervisors pictured below.
THE DISTRICT BOARD HAS INITIATED AND ENCOURAGED EVENTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS LISTED BELOW:
? Submitted 16 articles to The News-Journal
? Distributed 1,000 programs and 500 inserts to local churches in observance of
? Soil Stewardship Week
? Initiated weekly radio program on WSHB
? Published 500 copies of Long Rang Plan for distribution
? Held 9 regular monthly meetings
? Published Fiscal year 1981 Annual Report in The News-Journal
? Distributed 330 cartoon booklets to elementary school
? Distributed 3,000 loblolly and 3,000 longleaf pine trees to local landowners
? Sponsored student to attend Resource Conservation Workshop
? Sponsored Poster Contest In grammar and elementary schools
? Installed over 130,000 feet of corrugated plastic drain tile for "subirrigation"
? Handled 13 fish applications and 5 applications for wildlife seed
? Distributed list of materials available from District to local schools
? Assisted grammar school students with nature trail hikes and discussion of out
door classrooms

Kellerman of Lumber Bridge represented Hoke
District at the Resource Conservation Workshop
held at fi.C. State University in Raleigh. Each year
one student is selected to attend.
This 3000 ft. long diversion prevents crop land ero
sion on Kenneth Hendrix farm. Brown-top millet
(resembles Johnson-grass) was drilled with Bahla
grass to provide wildlife benefit as well as to protect
the diversion.

13 fish applications were taken this year, most of
which consisted of bass, bream and catfish. Applica
lions for fish should be made by the end of
September to be assured of your fish delivery in the
fall.

Bahiagrass is a hearty erosion control grass on san
dy soils. Bahia is preventing silting and gully ero
sion around John W. King pond near Ashley Heights.

Laser operated drain tile machine can install I OO ft.
of tile per minute. This past March, this machine
alone installed 131.276 ft. on Hoke County farms.
Omer Register has had several years of success with
no-ttll soybeans on his farm near Rockflsh. This is
an excellent way to conserve moisture, fuel, ex
penses, as well as soil.
