MUSIC FOR STUDENTS ?? Jackson Parkhurst is on the stage at Hoke County High School's MacDonald Gymnasium starting to talk to students and teachers about the North Carolina Symphony chamber music concert about to start. Parkhurst is assistant conductor and director of education of the North Carolina Symphony. The program was held Friday morning for students in Grades Four through Six in the Hoke schools. Some of the students later in the program played the auto-harp and bells. Area Incidents ? Store Damaged; Reward Offered Someone broke into Huffman Grocery on N.C. 211 west cutoff near Upchurch Junior High School between 7 p.m. Thursday and 6:55 a.m. Friday, damaged the store and took 5100 worth of food stamps and some change. Joe Huffman, the store's owner and operator, said he was offering ^ $100 reward to anyone who provid es information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was responsible for the theft and van dalims. Maj. J.R. Riley of the Hoke County Sheriffs Department, who is investigating, said Tuesday Huff man was to advise him whether anything else was stolen and that he planned to check with Huffman ) Tuesday afternoon. He added that no arrest had been made up to then. Huffman said the store was so badly damaged he had to keep it closed a day to clean up. He said that, among other things, an adding machine and bottles were broken. Huffman said there was no way of figuring the losses. _ He said, "I can't believe this," w when he opened his store Friday morning and saw what had been done. When Melvin L. Dees of Rt. 3. Fayetteville, returned to his home near Rockfish about 10 a.m. Monday after visiting with his daughter in Virginia since Septem ber 27, he discovered someone had broken into his house, and ran ^ sacked it and took some items, " which weren't listed in the report filed at the Sheriffs Department. The report says the people who broke in cooked something on the stove, and apparently ate while watching television, as plates were found in front of the TV set. Horse shoe tracks were found around the outside of the house. Someone also broke into the home of Robert Warren behind fc Pete's Exxon the night of Septem ber 28-29 by forcing the padlocks off the back door. Nothing was reported missing but S10 damage had been done to the door. Susan Bright Mclnnis of Jordan Mobile Home Park, N.C. 211 west, reported someone broke into her mobile home between September 26 and 28 and stole $10. The ^ damage to the door made by the break-in amounted to about S30. The thief got into the trailer by pushing out a screen, taking the glass from a door, and then unlocking the door by reaching in. In Raeford, Police Chief Leonard Wiggins, hearing a siren and burglar alarm sounding, drove to the home of M.A. Maxwell at 318 N. Fulton St., just as Maxwell ^ arrived from church after hearing the same sound. They found that the house alarm had been set off when someone broke the glass on a back door to get into the house. The prowler was frightened away by the founding of the alarm before he could get into the house. A neighbor saw a male running from the house and chased him but lost him in downtown Raeford. fc Several case* of larceny were reported in recent weeks to the Sheriff i and Police departments. An automotive battery, two truck tires and two Mud Hog pumps were reported stolen between September 20 and 27 from a died at Carolina Turf on Airport Road. The battery, worth $50 was recovered. The Mud Hogs were valued at $1,200 each and the truck tires at $300 total. James Freeman of Vaw Road p reported pome of his furniture was I taken September 27 after it was set outside Atlas Dudley's house. Dudley said he put it out believing Freeman was going to get it the same day. Freeman left the furni ture at Dudley's in preparing to move from 804 Saunders Street to his new residence on Jones Hill. The furniture missing consists of two wooden beds, four dining chairs, a mirror and a rocking chair. Someone stole a portable genera tor owned by Dick Weeks Con struction Co. of Asheboro from the power substation on SR 1403 September 29 or 30 during the night. Ida Smith of Hope Mills reported a well pump and tank worth $50 stolen from her vacant house in Hoke County. Three bicycles were reported stolen. John W. Tyler of Rt. 4, Raeford, U.S. 401 north, told the Sheriff s Department someone took a S150 men's bike from his carport between October 2 and 4. Gaston Locklear of Rt. 1, Rae ford, reported a $100 boy's bike was stolen from his property Sep tember 30 or October 1 . Henry Earl Goins of Rt. 1, Red Springs, reported his bicycle was locked in Eddie's Garage in Red Springs and when he returned October 1 to get it, it was gone. It was valued at $45. Someone stole a $29.95 watch from the Treasure Chest September 28. Several people were in the store, and when they left, the theft was discovered. Someone broke into a truck owned by Donna Ruban of 712 N. Jackson St., Raeford, October 1 while it was parked at her home and stole a CB radio, a $7 pocketbook, and jewelry. The stolen property was valued at a total of $300. Neil McDonald reported Mon day someone stole his 1969 Chevro let at his business, McDonald's Tire Co., at 114 Racket Alley. The car, valued at $500, was found later the same day, and Vincent Ross and Nathaniel LeGrand, both of Raeford, were arrested and charged with larceny and posses sion of stolen.property. Someone tried unsuccessfully to pry the CB radio antenna off the trunk lid of Glenn Spivey's car Monday night in the Edinborough Shopping Center parking lot while Spivey was working at the A&P. The would be thief did about $100 damage with his effort. ACCIDENT -? Beth Archer, a young Raeford girl, lies on the pavement at the U.S. 401 College Drive intersection Thursday night shortly after her bicycle and a car collided. She was reported not hurt seriously enough to be admitted to a hospital. Miss Archer was riding across 401 at the intersection when the accident happened. The Raeford City Council Monday night, as a result of the accident, asked City Manager Ron Matthews to request the State Department of Transportation to put up a flashing light at the intersection.
