Anytime you can get your runners to finish in 1st. 3rd, and 5th places, it is hard to beat. If one baseball is tossed horizontally while at the same in stant a second baseball is dropped vertically from the same height, both of them will reach the ground simultaneously. Bucks Thinking Upset Friday Night The Hoke High Bucks are look ing for the biggest upset of the year as they take on fifth ranked Pinecrest Friday night, on their home turf. If the one and six Bucks can pull it off, the upset would be one of the biggest in the state during this year's high school season. While the Bucks were struggling to generate offense Friday night during their 15-0 loss to Reid Ross, the Patriots were maintaining their undefeated season's record by stopping Terry Sanford 28-21. Terry Sanford was the team that handed the Bucks their worse defeat of the season three weeks ago. 33-0. However, despite the rocky re cord. the Backs have been playing well defensively and with a little help from the offense could stay on the field with Pinecrest, Coach Tom Jones said. In Friday's loss, the defensive unit yielded only 150 yards to Reid Ross and the Bucks were in the game until the offense fumbled, the ball was scooped up and returned for a touchdown. Jones said. The Bucks were able to generate only six first downs during the evening and come up with only 61 yards in total offense. "If we can get our defense away from playing 60 to 70 downs per game and get them to have to play only 40 downs a game, then I think that we can compete." the coach said. The biggest problem with the Buck Frosh Remain Unbeaten Top Ellerbee In Comeback The freshmen football team pre served their unbeaten record by a scrappy comeback win. 21-20, against Ellerbee last Thursday. At the outset of the game it looked as if it was going to be another easy win for the Bucks as they scored on their first possession on a 10 yard run by tailback Marcus Graham. Terry Brasier kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0. The Bucks then ran into the chain-saw attack of the Ellerbee offense. The Ellerbee team scored three times, all on the halfback pass and converted two out of three extra points to make the half time score 20-7. In the second half it was all Bucks show time. On the Bucks' first possession of the second half and team capped a long drive with a 20 yard run by fullback David Jacobs and a 2 point conversion run by Marcus Graham to make the score 20-15 in Eller bee' s favor. mmmmatmemi The Bucks completed the scoring in the 4th quarter when quarter back Ricky Chavis kept the ball for a 25 yard jaunt into the end zone. The two point conversion attempt failed but the Bucks held on to win by a score of 21-20. The Bucks' defense posted an other good outing, except for the three halfback passes that went for Ellerbee scores. The defense lead by "Wild Buck" Ricky Chavis. who had 5 solo tackles and caused three' fumbles, held the Ellerbee offense to 63 yards rushing and only one first down in the second half. An outstanding defensive effort was also turned in by Michael McCrae. who had four tackles. Terry Brasier. Donnie Henderson. David Jacobs, and Kenneth Lock lear all recorded three tackles each. The freshmen team will travel to Wadesboro this Thursday to meet Anson County in the battle of the unbeatens. On a key play Friday night, the Backs needed a pass completion and had a receiver open, but he couldn't catch the ball, Jones said. Penalties and turnovers also killed the offense's chance of putting points on the board and controlling the ball, he said. "We have just got to be more consistant and to perform." Jones said. During Friday's contest. Reid Ross broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter, when running back Mike White ran five yards for a touchdown and Darryl Harrington carried over for the two-point conversion, making it 8-0 at the half. In the fourth quarter, Reid Ross's Kenny Jeffries ended any hopes of a Buck comeback by recovering a fumble and returning it 15 yards for a score. On the bright side, both the Buck Junior Varsity and the Fresh man teams were victorious last ij week. The J.V. team is leading the league after topping Reid Ross 8-b last Thursday. The J.V. Bucks take on Pinecrest in Raeford Thursday at 7 p.m. The junior Bucks are 5-2 for the season and 3-0 in the conference. The freshman team was also victorious last week edging Ellerbee 21-20 to remain undefeated for the I season. They are leading the nineth grade division.
