Townsend Inaugurated Friday r Dr. Robert G. Towruend Dr. Robert G. Townsend, a Raeford family physician, will be inaugurated Friday as president of the 1,500-member North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians at the organization's 34th Annual Scientific Assembly in Winston Salem. Dr. Townsend, who was certified as a family physician in 1970, one year after the general practice of medicine became a specialty, is a 1957 graduate of Wake Forest College. He graduated from the Univer sity of Louisville School of Medi cine in 1961 and served a one-year internship at Marion County Gen eral Hospital in Indianapolis, In diana, in 1962. Prior to his medical education, Dr. Townsend served five years in the Air Force as an all-weather fighter pilot -- flying F-86 Saber jets at stations in the western part of the U.S., Europe and Africa. In his inauguration speech to the gathering of 400 family physicians. Dr. Townsend urged his colleagues to "stand up and be counted" by being the first specialty to say -- "we will do our part in seeing that unfortunate people who have lost their jobs as a result of the recession receive medical services without regard. to their ability to pay." He asked members of the Aca demy to present their views on how the specialty can take up the slack during these critical times. "Let us not wait for politicians to force upon us their concepts of govern ment benevolence," he cautioned. The Raeford family physician has served in many posts in the Academy -- as chairman of a number of committees, district director, vice president and presi dent-elect. He is a charter member of the American Board of Family Practice. He is married to the former Mina Hensley of Williamson, West Vir ginia. They are parents of two sons and a daughter. Mrs. Townsend serves on the Hoke County Board of Education. Area Incidents Court To Hear Shooting Charges Friday P A Hoke County man is scheduled to be tried in Hoke County District Court November 12 on charge of wounding another man and Firing a weapon into an occupied car October 31. Joseph (Joe) Davis, 34, of Rt. 3, Box 321, Raeford, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, to Robert McRae of Rt. 1. p Raeford. while McRae and four companions were in the car near Davis's residence behind the Chap ter One Club in the Queenmore Community, the Hoke County Sheriffs Department reported. Davis told the investigators he fired in self defense after someone shot at him. McRae was hit in a shoulder by a jT .22 caliber rifle bullet, one of ** several fired, according to wit nesses, and was given emergency medical treatment. Two shots hit the car, the report adds. The others in the car with McRae were Cleveland McRae and Jason Burney, both of Rt. 1, Raeford, and William Peterkin and Joe E. McGeachy, both of Raeford, the ^ warrants say. Davis was still in jail this week. In other incidents filed with the Sheriff" s Department, a 12 gauge shotgun worth $119 was reported stolen from Creighton McMillan's trailer on Rt. 1, Shannon, between October 28 and November 2. McMillan said all the furnishings had been moved to the back so the damage done by a fire earlier could be repaired and that the gun was lying on his bed October 28 the last time he saw it. He discovered it missing Novem ber 2 when he went to get it to go hunting, McMillan said. In an unrelated incident, some one broke into Danny Beasley's residence on Rt. 1, Lumber Bridge, November 2 and stole a .357 magnum pistol, a box of bullets, jewelry, a pair of men's underwear and S14 in change. Mrs. Connie Ellis reported her daughter's clarinet valued at S332 was missing from Upchurch Junior High School. Her daughter discovered the loss when she returned to school to practice October 28. She had left the instrument there October 27. Marshall Royce Miller, Rt. 1, Shannon, reported November 1 someone stole five bicycles tires, a bike seat and a kick stand, valued at a total of $258.95 from his property. Hank Henderson, Rt. 1. Lumber Bridge, reported someone stole a S273.20 chain saw, three cases of soft drinks worth S30, and three five-gallon buckets worth $3 in all from his property between October 27 and 31. Raeford Police Chief Leonard Wiggins reported the following complaints were received recently! Mrs. E. Haddon of 316 McRae St., reported November 2 that someone tried to take the radio from her car and failed but did about $100 damage to the dash board in attempting to steal the radio. Joe C. Holt reported Thursday someone took three blank checks from his checkbook in the office of Stove and Fireplace Center at 631 W. Prospect Ave., Raeford. He said two of the checks were returned, forged and cashed, one for 5226 and the other for S133. Someone got 55 worth of gas at the Short Stop at Davis Bridge Friday, then left after saying he wanted to get money to pay for it and other goods he had asked for, but did not return. Charles McMillan's store on the U.S. 401 bypass was broken into Thursday night or early Friday and $1,070.50 worth of merchandise was stolen. The property stolen includes 110 cartons of cigarettes. 35 cases of beer, a kerosene heater, and 25 cans of meat. Someone tried unsuccessfully to break into Joe McPhaul's home on Rt. 1, Red Springs, Thursday. The thief or thieves damaged a door in the effort and also tried unsuccess fully to remove a window air conditioner to get into the house. J.B. Martino and City Ptl. Clarence Brown recovered Friday a car reported stolen last month in Jacksonville. Fla., and arrested the driver. Zackery Warren Saunders of Jack sonville. on a charge of possessing a stolen vehicle. Saunders is being held in Hoke County Jail for Jacksonville authorities who will apply to have him extradited to Florida. Wiggins said Martino and Brown and other local officers had been watching for a car of that descrip tion ? a 1980 Chrysler Cordova ? with a Florida license.
