Townsend Inaugurated Friday
r
Dr. Robert G. Towruend
Dr. Robert G. Townsend, a
Raeford family physician, will be
inaugurated Friday as president of
the 1,500-member North Carolina
Academy of Family Physicians at
the organization's 34th Annual
Scientific Assembly in Winston
Salem.
Dr. Townsend, who was certified
as a family physician in 1970, one
year after the general practice of
medicine became a specialty, is a
1957 graduate of Wake Forest
College.
He graduated from the Univer
sity of Louisville School of Medi
cine in 1961 and served a one-year
internship at Marion County Gen
eral Hospital in Indianapolis, In
diana, in 1962.
Prior to his medical education,
Dr. Townsend served five years in
the Air Force as an all-weather
fighter pilot -- flying F-86 Saber jets
at stations in the western part of the
U.S., Europe and Africa.
In his inauguration speech to the
gathering of 400 family physicians.
Dr. Townsend urged his colleagues
to "stand up and be counted" by
being the first specialty to say --
"we will do our part in seeing that
unfortunate people who have lost
their jobs as a result of the
recession receive medical services
without regard. to their ability to
pay."
He asked members of the Aca
demy to present their views on how
the specialty can take up the slack
during these critical times. "Let us
not wait for politicians to force
upon us their concepts of govern
ment benevolence," he cautioned.
The Raeford family physician
has served in many posts in the
Academy -- as chairman of a
number of committees, district
director, vice president and presi
dent-elect. He is a charter member
of the American Board of Family
Practice.
He is married to the former Mina
Hensley of Williamson, West Vir
ginia. They are parents of two sons
and a daughter.
Mrs. Townsend serves on the
Hoke County Board of Education.
