School News 1 Patti Smith Smith Wins Scholarship Patti Smith has received the District Scholarship of the North Carolina Association of Educa tional Office Personnel. To qualify a student must be planning to enter the business profession and be on outstanding academic student. Miss Smith has been accepted for admission to Campbell Univer sity and plans to major in account ing. She is a senior at Hoke County High School. Miss Smith was recognized for mally Thursday at the meeting of District Educational Office Per sonnel held in Harnett County. At State Fair Students Aid With Winning Exhibit depicting vocational education programs in North Carolina's public schools, won the Governor's Award as best educa tion exhibit at the State Fair in Raleigh this year. Hoke High School was one of the 19 schools helping to stage the elaborate exhibit, and scores of businesses and industries cooperated in the project by con tributing materials, equipment and staff assistance. Students of Eleanor Snead in the Marketing and Distributive Educa tion program at Hoke High assisted with the exhibit and operated the booth on Saturday, October 16. Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr., visiting the display under the big dome near the Hillsborough Street entrance, lauded the cooperative effort that produced it. He hailed the project as an indication of the quality of vocational programs, ty ing it in with hi?t proclamation of lyet-oj as i ne Tear ot tne f uDlic School." Hunt has called for recognition of "Schools of Ex cellence" as one phase of the observance. Agriculture Commissioner Jim Graham declared it to be the best exhibit at the Fair when he of ficiated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, October 15, the opening day of the Fair. His in formal pronouncement was con firmed later in the day by an im partial panel of judges. Award presentation took place the morn ing of Tuesday, October 19. Designed in the form of a huge carousel, the dome display covered the subject areas of Agriculture, Business and Office, Health Oc cupations, Home Economics, In dustrial Arts, Marketing and Distribution, Trade and Industry, and Prevocational Education. These Exhibits surrounded a large central column with streamers, mirrors, and special lighting. HELPED AT STATE FAIR ?? School Briefs Sharon Breeden Named Hoke High School Tutor Of The Month A certificate for being tutor of the month at Hoke County High School was awarded Sharon Breeden by the Hoke Reading Literacy Council last Wednesday. Sharon is one of 24 seniors who belong to HOSTS. The name of this club stands for Help Our Students To Succeed and is also its purpose. Along with tutoring for HOSTS. Sharon is an Honor Roll student. Hostetler Wins Local Bid For Morehead Chance Dorcas Hostetler, who lives in Raeford and attends Flora Mac donald Academy in Red Springs, and two Lumberton students, Mar garet Merck and George Britt, will enter district competition in early December for a John Motley More head Scholarship. These scholarships are awarded each year by the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Basketball Meeting Slated A meeting tor men and women interested in having men's and women's teams in the Adult Bas ketball League will be held Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Oakridge Community Center in Lumber Bridge. Miyochi Dudley, and accepted by the membership. They will sponsor an educational trip for the students they tutor in the spring. School Music Groups Hold Fruit Sale A fruit sale has been organized to raise money for the music pro gram in Raeford. Band and chorus students will be taking orders.
