Recently this group of soloists for the upcoming concert was named and the six people have a great deal in common. Suzanne Seawell is a soprano who moved to the Sandhills two years ago from Winston-Salem. Ms. Seawell studied voice at UNC-G, and has worked in both musical theater and opera. Cur rently she is teaching in the Carthage and Cameron elementary schools and sings solos at the Carthage Presbyterian Church. Barbara Roush is also a soprano that is new to the area. A native of Oregon, Ms. Roush studied voice at Ohio State and taught for ten years in the Columbus School system and in Seoul, Korea. Here in Moore County Barbara is the part time director of a women's barbershop singing group. John Watson is well known to Choral Society audiences having sung solos many times. John studied voice at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and was a soloist at Old South Church. Later he sang in the opera "Martha" with the National Opera Company and in Charlotte did the Baritone solos in the Brahms Requiem. John Hatcher is another familiar voice in the area, with solos in "Pirates of Penzance," "Messiah," and many other works done by the Choral Society. John's newest love is piano tuning and has many important instruments in the area in his care. While this takes some of his time, John teachers Spanish at Pembroke and French at Sand hills Community College. Thea Engelson is a soprano with many solos to her credit both here and in the Minneapolis area. Thea has a Bachelor of music education degree from the University of Minnesota and has taught high school vocal music for five years in the twin cities areas. She was a soloist with the Dale Warland Singers and soloist at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church. Presently Thea is instructor of voice and director of the Women's Ensemble at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg. She is also organist and choir director at Trinity Pres byterian College in Laurinburg. She is also organist and choir director at Trinity Presbyterian church in Laurinburg. (Catherine Ewing has been with the Choral Society for many years and has done many solos in many different works. She did solos in the "Messiah," the "Gloria" of Vi valdi, and other smaller choral works. She sings in church choirs and a few years back appeared at the Church of Wide Fellowship in a variety show singing alto in a women's trio that did a marvelous version of "Tuxedo Junction" and Gershwin's "Somebody Loves Me" with the author at the piano. (Catherine is a wonderfully versatile singer. All of these people will be heard in the Christmas concert given by the Moore County Choral Society in works by Schubert, Vaughan-Wil liams, and John Rutter. They are representative of the many fine singers that are a part of the society and will help create the spirit of the Christmas season in the Sandhills. Tickets are on sale now from any Choral Society member at S3 adults and $1.50 students under 18. Performances will be in the Cardi nal Ballroom of the Pinehurst Hotel at 4 p.m. & 8 p.m. Dec. 5th.
