The rear side of the pens at the Hoke County dog pound is sporting newly installed vinyl sheeting to protect the dogs and cats from the winter wind, making living considerably warmer. The concrete trough outside the botton of the pens was installed last year by Raeford municipal workers to make washing the concrete-Jloored pens easier and direct the waste water into the sewer system instead of the nearby creek where it had been going. The County Health Department had the winterizing of the pens done and plans to put flooring on the bottom of the boxes in the pens so the animals can keep off the concrete floor to sleep when it s cold and wet. The county commissioners authorized the winterizing improvements at a recent meeting. The cash outlay won t amount to more than a few hundred dollars, because of the low cost of materials. The labor has been provided by county and city employes. Most of the work of putting up the sheeting was done by the dog wardens. William Hales for the county, and Johnny Riley for the city. Share Y our Christmas 1982 Needs Help And Donations Share Your Christmas 1982, a community-wide collection and dis tribution of food, clothing, and toys, is now in operation Project Chairman Kay Thomas said. In 1981, Hoke County learned that the spirit of Christmas is sharing. That spirit of giving with love made Christmas special for the 140 families who received and Christ mas warmer for those who gave. Families with special needs will be referred through the schools, Health Department, Churches, in dividuals, Social Services, organi zations, and other agencies in a position to know the needs. These referrals will then be reviewed. Because of the need to receive contributions, the Department of Social Services has agreed to receive food, clothing, toys, and any other gifts. The items will then be turned over to the SHARE YOUR CHRISTMAS Committee for sort ing and distribution. Contributions may be brought to the Department between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday thru Friday, from now until December 6th. Anyone donating to SHARE YOUR CHRISTMAS is asked to inform the Department's reception ist of the donation so that they might be directed to the storage area. After December 6th, items will be received at the Hoke County Library during the following times: 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and from 9 a.m. until 12 Noon on Saturdays. All contributions will be needed by December 16th to allow suffi cient time to prepare SHARE YOUR CHRISTMAS for the fami lies. Monetary contributions may be mailed anytime between now and December 16th to: SHARE YOUR CHRISTMAS, c/o The News Journal, Post Office Box 550, Raeford, N.C. 28376. The money received will be used to purchase clothing articles and some toys. Families may register between December 7th and December 16th on Tuesday and Thursday after noons and Saturday mornings at the same times contributions will be received. The community's interest in this project could make a very real difference In ? child's or family's Christmas.
