If you haven't been contacted, you may call 875-2121 and someone will call on you for a greeting. We don't want to leave anyone out of this issue. When you call in. please give your name and street address or what route you live on so that we can be sure to gtve credit to the right door. Your cooperation in this will be appreciated. Autry Resigns (Continued from page 1) keep me busy." He said he has a brother in business in Greenville, N.C., and he might go in with him. He also plans to work with the East Carolina University Alumni Association. He holds his bachelor's and master's degrees from ECU, as well as an educa tional specialist degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also said he will make up his mind in the next year whether to stay in Hoke County. "We're flex ible," he said, of him and his wife. "There's nothing here to nail us down." The Autrys have been living in Arabia the past nine years. Autry was a school principal for about 27 years of his career and came to Hoke County 16 years ago as principal of Hoke County High School. He moved to that position from the principalship of East Montgo mery High School of Montgomery County. Before then he had been prin cipal of Northampton County's Gaston High. He also had been a teacher, including one year of such duty at Sherwood Bates Elemen tary School in Raleigh, then served as head football coach at Gibson ville. Autry is a native of Dunn and graduated from Dunn High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in World War II at 16 and at 18 was in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the latter the lait campaign of the war for American forces. Chrtstmm* Pmrmdm Saturday - 2.-00 p.m. Sheriff Barrington taking the oath of office for his new term Monday morning from Superior Court Clerk Juanita Edmond. His deputies, stan ding behind them, took their oaths right afterward. Hoke County's deputies sheriff are shown taking their oaths of office Monday morning from Clerk of Court Juanita Edmund in the Courthouse Annex. This ceremony followed the swearing-in of Sheriff Barrington to a new term. Commission Huddles On Space (Continued from page 1) missioner Ncill McPhatter. Balfour and Hunt were reelected last month, and Bratcher was elected to his first term in public office, replacing Mabel Riley, who lost her bid for a second term in the July 27 Democratic runoff primary. She was the first woman elected a Hoke County commissioner. Mrs. Edmund after swearing in the commissioners swore David Barrington into office for a new four-year term as sheriff, then ad ministered the oath of office to Barrington's 16 deputies. In their first business of the day the commissioners by unanimous vote adopted motions to reelect Balfour as chairman and Hunt as vice chairman. The commissioners took up business for slightly over an hour, then went into executive session from 10:55 a.m. till 12:25 p.m. to discuss the proposed addition of more space for county offices and a new contract for the Hoke Coun ty Ambulance Service, but took no official action on either subject. The commissioners adjourned shortly after reopening .the meeting. During their open meeting earlier, the commissioners adopted a motion to endorse a renewed ap plication of Lumbee Regional Development Association, Inc., for federal funds for establishment of low-rent housing for the elderly. This was a renewal that Balfour asked for. Earlier this year the commis sioners had given their endorse ment to the application when LRDA was planning to establish the housing in South Hoke and Rockfish. The original application was turned down because the federal agency requires that hous ing for the elderly be located close to medical and dental facilities, among others. The commissioners adopted a motion to accept a Si 2,495 addi tional Crisis Intervention Alloca tion (to pay for emergency heating fuel for the needy) in federal aid. Balfour explained that the payments would go direct to the fuel dealer rather than the reci pient. He said the additional ap plication brings the total for the year to S29.621. The commissioners in other business approved allocation of $70 in local matching funds to go with $70 from the Lumber River Council of Governments Emergen cy Medical Services Advisory Council for purchase of an up dated extrication device for use by the Hoke County Ambulance Ser vice and the Hoke County Rescue Squad. The county will be reimbursed by the two services. The device is used for helping more victims who have suffered spinal injuries in ac cidents. The commissioners appointed Upchurch to the Lumber River COG Board of Directors to replace DeVane, and Bratcher to the County Board of Health to replace Mrs. Riley. They also voted to cancel their regular mid-month meeting for December since it comes close to the Christmas holiday season, and to postpone to January 4 from January 3 their regular monthly meeting, for the same reason. Balfour noted that the commis sioners could always have a called meeting if something came up this month to require one. The com missioners customarily cancel their mid-December meeting annually because of the pending holidays. This month's meetings would ' have been held on December 20. The commissioners in other holiday-related action adopted a motion authorizing all county of fices to close for a Christmas lunch December 23 from noon until 1 p.m. The lunch will be held in the Courthouse Annex. p Parade Saturday (Continued from page I ) beauty queens and decorated vehicles." The procession will be led by a U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard and also will include a Pope Air Force Base Honor Guard. Among the attractions will be a live Nativity scene entered by Tabernacle Baptist Church of f Rockfish, the bands of Hoke County High School, Upchurch Junior High School, and Red Springs High School, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, clowns and Tweety Bird. "We expect the public will observe this to be a parade with significance of the season, but also as entertainment for the children," Howard said.' , Right after the parade ends, Santa will be in the Santa House, in the railroad depot on Main Street by the railroad tracks, to receive the children and listen to their wishes for Christmas presents. Santa House is sponsored by the Raeford Merchants Association. The parade floats will be judged by members of the Raeford Junior ' Women's Club.
