I Disease ot the liver (cirrhosis) is one commonly associated with long term alcohol use. Heart disease, malnutrition, high blood pressure, and cancer have ail be? n strongly linked with alcohol use. Heavy drinking over many years may aiso contribute to serious nervous or mental disorders, or ^ may cause permanent brain damage. Alcohol, like other drugs that affect the central nervous system, can be physically addictive, creat ing withdrawal symptoms when alcohol intake ceases. Of course, drinking does not have to be long term or addictive to cause problems, injury, or acci dental death. Only two cans of beer or two } drinks of 86 proof whiskey con sumed by the average person within an hour, on an empty stomach, result in a blood alcohol level of 0.05 per cent. Scientific studies indicate that even this amount limits coordina tion, and increases a persons risk of becoming involved in a traffic or household accident. Chuck Meek, Senior Clinician at Sandhills Center Substance Abuse Program, believes that people are prone to overdrink during the Holiday Season. He advises that people use alcohol cautiously, es pecially when driving. For more information on Alcohol or Alcoholism, including treatment services, please contact Dennis R. Brewster, Counselor at the Hoke County Unit of Sandhills Center. Early Schools In Display A display on early education in the school system was done Thanksgiving week for American Education Week by Mrs. Darlene Clark's Fourth Graders at South Hoke School. Many classes at the school used the display as a teaching tool to acquaint the students with the progress and struggles of the Hoke County educational system. The display was in the foyer of the school entrance and traced the history of the schools from the first known building, Glenecho. in 1908, to its restoration in 1977. The students learned such facts as when integration began, the identity of the first black student to attend a formerly all-white school, and why Hawk Eye was named South Hoke, when the first mention of public transportation to a school was made, and even of the time students were paid to attend school. The pictures of the old school buildings were furnished by the Hoke County Public Library. -- - ^ WINNING TEAM - Shown here is the 1981-82 winning team for Jump Rope For Heart. The team collected $427.15 for the Heart Association. Members are presenting Mrs. Dorothy Cameron, Hoke Conty Public Library supervisor, with a book on cardiovascular fitness.
