Barnes, McRae Named Athletes Of Week 9 j Sabrina Barnes and Tony iMcRae named Hoke High Female and Male Athletes of the Week by a vote of the Buck's Coaching Staff for the week of November 29- December 3. Tony McRae, a 6'4" 16 year old J sophomore plays center on the { Buck's Varsity Basketball Team. J Tony received the honor for his : play in Hoke's games against Cape Fear and South View. : In the Cape Fear game, Tony ? scored 11 points and had 9 re \ bounds in a close 60-59 losing ef C fort. > In the 65-57 defeat of South I View on Friday night, Tony had 16 J points and 14 rebounds. J Tony has played basketball dur ' ing both his 8th and 9th grade ' years. He played on the varsity team during his freshmen year. Tony plans to attend college upon graduation from high school : and major in math. ? Tony attends Rock Hill Baptist Church and is the son of Ms. Carolyn McRae of 1913 Tylertown j Loop in Raeford. 1 Sabrina Barnes, a 5' 11" 17-year : old senior, plays center on the 1 Girl's Varsity Basketball Team. She was tapped as top Female ? Athlete of the Week because of her play in Hoke's two victories over Cape Fear and South View. In the 53-48 victory over Cape Fear, Sabrina scored 20 points and j in the 52-48 victory over South View, Sabrina repeated her effort by scoring another 20 points. Sabrina is also averaging 7 re bounds per game. Coach Audrey Long has high praise for her super charge. "Sabrina is a dynamite basketball player, she works hard knowing that most of the time she will be double teamed," said Coach Long. "This seems to help Sabrina play better since she knows the competition is comng after her and she will have to work even harder for everything she gets. We depend a lot on her and her board strength for rebounding." Sabrina is very athletic and is a member of the Girl's Track Team in addition to being a member of the basketball squad. She received the MVP Award for track in her sophomore year. She also received the MVP Award for basketball last year as well as being named to the Southeastern 4A All Conference Team. Sabrina is active in other aspects of campus life as well as athletics. She is a member of both the Spanish Club and the Monogram Club. Next fall, Sabrina plans to enter UNC- Wilmington to work toward a degree in Communications as well as take part in athletics. Sabrina attends Rock Hill Bap tist Church and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barnes of 1916 Tylertown Loop in Raeford. Lady Eagles 2-0 The Upchurch School Lady Eagles began their basketball season Tuesday, November 30 hosting Hillcrest of Fayetteville. Pregame jitters plagued the first quarter's action with costly tur novers. The Eagles took a 10-2 lead in the first quarter and started to gel it together in the second. At halftime the Eagles took a 27-7 lead. The Eagles continued the attack winning 60-19. Thelma Watkins and Rosalind Day lead the scoring for the Eagles with 17 and 16 points respectively. Reese lead Hillcrest with 1 1 points. Thursday, Dec. 2 the Lady Eagles hosted Irwin of Fort Bragg. The Eagles managed a 31-13 decision but didn't have the com posure to get the game really go ing. T. Kelton lead the Eagles scoring with 12 points and fine aggressive rebounding. C. Millian, J. Hunt, T. Watkins, and A. Armstrong each .contributed four points to the Eagle cause. Johnson and Titus scored five and four points respectively for Ir win. The Eagles hosted East Lee December 7 and will be on the road December 9 at Hillcrest, December 14 at West Lee, December 16 the Eagles will host Edgewood before the Christmas break. West Hoke Observes American Ed Week The week of November 15-2U was full of exciting and fun-filled learning activities at West Hoke School as the principal, faculty, staff, parents and students observ ed American Education Week as well as Children's Book Week. The daily activities at the school included the following: -Monday - As part of its obser vance, parents came to the class to read to the students. -On Tuesday the principal, faculty, staff and students direw funny hats depicting their favorite book character. --On the following day, parents visited the classrooms during Open House and had lunch with their children. -On Thursday, the pirncipal, faculty and staff changed roles and they performed the duties of others. The week ended by the faculty, staff and students dressing as their favorite book character.
