Mrs. David Clifton Smith
Miss Wendy Denise Linthicum,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Joe
Linthicum, became the bride of
| David Clifton Smith, son of Mr.
? and Mrs. Joe Williams Smith, in a
double ring ceremony, Friday,
December 17, at 2:00 p.m. in the
Evangelical Methodist church. The
Rev. Tex Deaton officiated.
The altar was decorated for the
Christmas season.
A program of wedding music
was presented by Janet Best.
The bride, who was given in
k marriage by her father, wore a
? white floor length gown with mat
ching veil and carried a bridal bou
quet.
Shelia Hardin, served as maid of
honor, and wore a floor length or
chid dress. Leslie Foster,
bridesmaid, wore a floor length
dress of white eyelet. Patrice
Henderson Laura Foster served as
flower girl.
Bill Webb served as best man
^ and ushers were Allen Howard and
Cosmopolitans Have
New Year s Eve Party
The Cosmopolitan Club held its
annual New Year's Eve party on
December 31. The semi-formal af
fair took place in the Morgan Hall
ballroom at Flora Mcdonald
^ Academy in Red Springs. The
hosts committee greeted the
members and their guests upon ar
rival in the reception area.
The hall was decorated in the
traditional seasonal manner. Each
of the arched windows was adorn
ed with fresh greenery, berries and
a solitary lighted taper. Candles
and greenery were used on each
table throughout the hall. A New
| Year's Eve display was also used to
accent the entrance area.
The rotunda provided the setting
for the formal refreshment table,
which was decorated with two five
branched silver candelabra. Light
from the burning tapers il
luminated the crystal and silver
trays, laden with hot and cold hors
d'oeuvres.
Music for the occasion was pro
^ vided by the Sound Approach.
Live entertainment was also in
cluded at 1 1 :00 p.m.
There were 35 member couples
and 17 guest couples in attendance.
Holiday visitors in the home of
Mrs. Jean Hodges were her son-in
law and daughter. Mr. and Mrs.
Chuck Smith, and grandson,
Adam Hicks, of Houston, Texas.
Mrs. Kerr Stevens returned Friday
after a visit with her sister. Miss
Rosa Lee Hassell in Henderson
ville.
Mr. and Mrs. Monty Lamont and
children of New Bern spent the
weekend here with their parents.
Mr. and Mrs. J.K. McNeill, and
Mrs. William Lamont.

The mother of the bride chose a
street length dress of wine and the
groom's mother chose a street
length dress of orchid.
A reception, hosted by parents
of the bride, was held in the church
fellowship hall. The receiving line
consisted of the bridal couple,
their parents and members of the
wedding party.
Johnsie Foster served the wed
ding cake and punch was poured
by Jean Schulenburg. Tea girls
were Melinda Kay, Mary Ann and
Bobbie Jo Britt. Stacey Foster
presided over the bridal book.
Lillian Hendrix also assisted in
serving.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith are both
graduates of Hoke County High
School, and he graduated from the
law enforcement school in the Air
Force.
After a wedding trip to Myrtle
Beach the couple will be at home at
Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.
Mrs Webb
Honored
Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Webb
entertained friends and relatives
with a party at their home on
Route 2, Thursday evening,
December 23. The occasion was a
surprise birthday celebration for
Mrs. Mary Webb on her 85th bir
thday. Christmas decorations were
used throughout the house.
Refreshments were cake squares,
nuts, finger sandwiches, Christmas
candies, punch and a two tiered
birthday cake. Sixty guests called
between 7 and 9.
Mrs. Webb has two children,
Jimmy and Mrs. Brown Hendrix.
She also has nine grandchildren
and ten great-grandchildren.
Visiting her later during the
holidays were Mr. and Mrs. Jerry
Gaudet and sons, Ricky and Mark
of Charlotte, and Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Webb and daughter of
Aberdeen.

during the holidays.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl McClain and
sons. Brian and Eric, of Charlotte

Mr. and Mrs. Don Slaughter and
family of Kingsport. TN. visited
friends here during the holidays.
Mr. Slaughter is a former Hoke
County Recreational director.
Caroline Conoly returned to her
home in Fayetteville Friday after
spending several days here with her
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.C.
Conoly.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Davis an
nounce the birth of a baby girl,
Ashley Nicole, Tuesday, December
28, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital,
Fayetteville.
Mrs. Davis is the former Martha
Jo Teal of Raeford. This is the
third child, the other two are boys.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Hicks, Jr.
and Master Henry Wayland Hicks,
III, of Candor happily announce
the birth of their daughter and his
sister, McKenzie Alexis Hicks, on
December 22, 1982, at Moore
Memorial Hospital, Pinehurst.
Mrs. Hicks is the former Lydia
Farmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alex Farmer. Paternal grand
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry
W. Hicks of Candor.
Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Scott Buring
announce the birth of a son,
Shawn Jeffrey, December 23,
1982, at Womack Army Hospital,
Fort Bragg.
Mrs. Buring is the former Deborah
K. Thompson.
Mr. and Mrs. Deuce Niven of
Tabor City announce the arrival of
their first daughter, Elizabeth
Anne.
She was born 11:03 p.m. New
Year's Eve at Loris, S.C. Com
munity Hospital and was the last
baby born there in 1982.
Paternal grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. William T. Niven of Raeford
and maternal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Ray Wicker of Tabor Ci
ty.
Elizabeth has an older brother,
Will, age 6.

At Retirement
Graham Monroe, insurance
agent for N.C. Farm Bureau
Mutual Insurance Co., was
honored on December 29, 1982 at
a retirement dinner in Morrison's
Restaurant.
Bob Blankenship, agency
manager, and Reid Childress,
agent, for Hoke County Farm
Bureau hosted the party. Mr.
Monroe's sons, Zan of Newbern,
N.C. and Eugene of Garner, N.C.
and their spouses, directors of
Hoke County Farm Bureau, office
personnel, and their spouses and

Manager, and his wife of Lumber
ton, N.C. enjoyed the happy occa
sion with Mr. Monroe.
A ball clock was presented to
Mr. Monroe for his retirement gift
from the office personnel of the
Hoke County Farm Bureau.

Charles Bryan Archer, son of Mr.

Political Science, is employed with
