The cat is among the animals at the County Dog Pound. Hales can be reached through the Hoke County Department by anyone interested in adopting this cat at the pound. CATS NEED FRIENDS, TOO Dear Doctor: Does it adversely affect a cat to leave her alone dur ing the day? Our cat is in this situa tion and we find she is beginning to become unfriendly. Is there a con nection between the unfriendliness and the long hours of absence? Answer: Cats do get lonely so be sure she has plenty of toys to play with and you may want to consider getting a second cat as a compa nion. Leaving a radio playing seems to keep animals entertained and feel ing more comfortable. Because of the sound of the radio cats appear to be in a better mood and dogs make much less of a racket. Having your pet spayed or neutered also could help this problem since hormones may be causing your cat's unfriendliness. These kinds of personality changes usually occur when a cat is in heat or during the peak of the breeding season. Dear Doctor: My problem has to do with my toy poodle. She is now WANTS HOME ?? This terrier- type male dog, about a year old , is at the Dog Pound but needs a good home, since he 's a good pet. M i/liam Hales, county dog warden, is the man to talk to about adopting this or any other dog, or cat, he has picked up in line of duty. Hales can be reached through the County Health Department. two years old. Since one year ago, she seems to be having some pro blem with her tongue. When at rest with her mouth closed, her tongue always sticks out about a quarter of an inch. And when she's up and playing, she is almost con stantly making licking actions. 1 have two other small dogs and they both act quite naturally as far as this subject goes but my toy poddle acts as if she must always be licking even when it's just the air. Answer: This sounds like a natural habit particular to your poodle. However, you may want to have a veterinarian examine your pet for tonsilitis, pharnygitis or dental problems. If it is none of these conditions, there is a chance that it could be a dysfunction of one of the sym pathetic cranial nerves, and not much can be done to remedy this situation. If you would like to have this checked out, contact a neurologist at the nearest universi ty with a college of veterinary medicine. (Do you have a question about pet care? If so send it to "YOU AND YOUR PET," 112 Johnston Street, Smithfield, N.C. 27577).
