Silver Hill Gang Tops Suns By 13 The Men's Basketball League * sponsored by the Parks and % Recreation continued action as the Silver Hill gang defeated the Suns ' 69-56. V. McDougald was high scorer for the Silver Hill Gang with 19 points and right on his heels were G. Drawhorn with 18 and C. Chandler with 12. The Suns were sparked by W. Love with 13 points, J. Gilman 12 and N. McNeill with 10. As the actions continued, the All Stars downed the 76'ers 72-63. All Stars leading scorers were G. Maynor with 38 points, and R. Maynor with 14 points while D. Huff threw in 12 points and K. ? McDonald added 12 points to pace * the way for the 76'ers. ; The final game of the night paired the Silver Hill Gang against the Scurlock Tigers. The Silver Hill Gang defeated the Scurlock Tigers 97-61. V. McDougald led all scor ing with 23 points and C.Chandler threw in 17 for the Silver Hill Gang. D. Leggett led the Scurlock Tigers with 15 points and K. Jones scored 13 points. January 12 night action, the 76'ers defeated the Wrecking Crew 94-48. K. McDonald with 20 points, and P. Black with 19 were high for the 76'ers. P. Lomack with 15 points. L- Ellerbree with 12, and M. Jones With 10 were high for the Wrecking Crew. : The second game between the All Stars and the Silver Hill Gang was a thriller. The Silver Hill Gang nipped the All Stars 78-74. G. Drawhorne scored 19 points for the Silver Hill Gang and G. Maynor led the All Stars with 35 points. In Thursday night action, in the first game, the All Stars downed the Scurlock Tigers 84-74. R. Maynor led the All Stars with 35 points while P. Leggett scored 23 points. K. Jones 12, andC. Ray 10 were high scorers for the Scurlock Tigers. To round out the week, we saw { the 76'ers defeat the Suns 78-68. [ Leading scorers for the 76'ers were v P. Black with 22 points, and J. ; Carthens threw in 17 points to lead the way for the Suns. Hoke Matmen Split Matches The Buck wrestling team split two matches this week, winning over Terry Sanford and losing to Scotland County. In the match on Tuesday, January U, Hoke recorded its first conference victory by defeating Terry Sanford by a score of 48-20. As has been the case all year, Hoke gained a lead in the lightweight divisions, lost points in the middleweight divisions and won in the heavyweight divisions. Hoke gained a quick 36-0 lead as they won the first six weight class matches by forfeits or pins. Billy Locklear, in the 100 pound division; John Davis, in the 107 pound division; and Don Woods, in the 1 14 pound division, all received forfeits in their divisions. Marvin Pequese. Tyrone Jackson and Ricky Allen then recorded three quick pins to propel Hoke into a lead they would not surrender for the remainder of the match. Terry Sanford edged back in the middleweight divisions to somewhat narrow the score. Hoke then came back with a pin by Darrell Kelly in the 187 pound division and a forfeit to Robert Moody in the 197 pound division to close out the scoring for Hoke. In the Friday night match against conference rival Scotland County. Hoke lost a squeaker by a score of 36-33. Hoke started the match with a pin by Billy Locklear in the 100 pound division moving his season record to 9-3. John Da\is. in the 107 pound division then recorded the fastest pin of the year for a Hoke wrestler as he pinned his op ponent in 14 seconds. Hoke then went into a tailspin as they lost seven of the next nine matches. The only bright spots during this time came in the 121 pound weight class as Marvin Peguese won his match by a decision and Ricky Allen pinned his opponent in the 134 pound division. With only two matches remain ing, Hoke trailed by a score of 36-21. Hoke then pulled the score back to a final 36-33 with pins by Robert Moody, at 197 pounds and Charles Matthews in the heavyweight division. Hoke's next home match will be on Wednesday, January 19 against Reid Ross. Southland, a 5'8" center on the girl's freshmen basketball team. was named as Female Athlete of the Week for her perfor mances in games last week against E.E. Smith and Scotland County. In the 54-46 victory over E.E. Smith. Vernordra had 17 points and two rebounds and in the 39-37 squeaker over Scotland, she had 16 points and nine rebounds. Vernordra is very sports mind ed. as she has played basketball for two years at Upchurch and volleyball in the 8th grade. She is very involved in her church. Leach Springs Baptist, as a member of the choir and a member of the Touch of Teen Club. She also has many hobbies among which is included art. music and dancing. Vernordra plans to attend col lege upon completion of high school. Vernordra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Southerland of Vass Road in Raeford. Ricky Chavis, a 5 '9", 145 pound point guard on the boy's freshmen basketball team, was also awarded the honor of Athlete of the Week for his performances in last weeks contest against E.E. Smith and Scotland County. In the E.E. Smith game, Ricky lead a comeback performance of the Baby Bucks with 18 points in cluding a last second shot to win the game 59-38. Ricky, active in several sports - as quarterback on the freshmen football team, point guard on the basketball team and pitcher outfielder on the baseball team, plans to attend college and prepare for a career involving sports in the area of coaching. Ricky is very active in areas other than sports. He is serving as Freshmen class president, a member of the IEA Road Runners (a local running club), a member of the IEA Parent -Student com mittee, and works in a part time job. Ricky is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Chavis of the South Hoke community. Auto Racing Kicks Off In Rockingham March 3 Premier automobile racing in three different categories, plus the sport's most unique manpower race involving automobiles will provide a special season-opening blast for North Carolina Motor Speedway's Warner Hodgdon Carolina 500 festivities March 3-6. Highlighting the weekend will be the 18th Carolina SOO-mile Winston Cup Grand National event, which came under sponsor ship of California industrialist Warner Hodgdon in 1982. This race is scheduled to begin at 1 2.-05 p.m. Sunday, March 6. and will serve as the climax for the tradi tional spring kickoff for auto rac ing in the Carolinas - Virginia, Eastern coast areas. J.H. AUSTIN INSURANCE SINCE 1960 AUTO - FIRE - LIFE CASUALTY Cale Yar borough drove the M.C. Anderson Buick to victory last year, and will be defending his title in a Harry Ranier racer spon sored by Hardees - Coca-Cola - Valvoline. Yar borough and last year's crew chief Tim Brewer also captured the Union 76/Rockingham Pit Crew championship by setting a world record of 15.704 seconds for in stalling 14 gallons of gas from two filler cans and changing two right side tires. The 17th Union 76 Pit Crew Race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5. This competition is the only NASCAR - sanctioned event of its kind. Another feature on Saturday's program will be the Coca-Cola 200-mile Late Model Sportsman race, which will follow the pit crew race and a special event for the high-powered Formula 200 karts, capable of speeds up to 130 m.p.h. The Budweiser Late Model Sportsman event will feature NASCAR's Finest warriors of the short tracks in weekend dueling going against some of WCGN top not chers such as defending Coca Cola 200 champ David Pearson and Dale Earnhardt. Jack Ingram is the Sportsman champion.
