) First Conference Games j Hoke Varsity Boys Split, Girls Lose 2 | Hoke High's Bucks broke even and the Hoke girls lost both games last week in the Southeastern Con ference openers of the basketball season. The Bucks knocked off Terry Sanford 80-68 on January 11 on the Hoke court, then the following Friday night lost an overtime con test, 67-65, to Scotland at Scotland. The Hoke girls took a 42-41 overtime loss in the Terry Sanford game, then dropped a 47-42 deci sion to Scotland. The Hoke Junior Varsity boys turned back Terry Sanford 49-44 with Blue topping the winners with 14 and McLean putting in 19 for Sanford. The Hoke varsity squads played Reid Ross at Reid Ross and the Hoke JVs played the Ross juniors at Hoke High Tuesday night and Tuesday afternoon respectively. The varsity results last week put the boys' record at 8-4 over-all and 1-1 in conference play, and the girls' mark at 7-3 over-all and 0-2 in conference competition. In the Sanford game, Hoke's Audrey Long "Doing Fine' Audrey Long, Hoke County High School's girls' head basket ball coach, was reported Monday "doing fine" and possibly due to go home from Moore Memorial Hospital at Pinehurst Tuesday. This was reported by a hospital spokesman. Miss Long was admitted Thurs day afternoon for treatment of a blood clot. She was in the Intensive Care Unit for a time after that. Buckettes Take 8th The Hoke High School ninth grade girls' basketball team finally were able to pull out a tough win against a very stubborn Scotland - 39-37. At halftime Hoke was winning 19 to 17. Both teams scored 20 points the second half. In the third quarter the Bucket tes stretched their lead to five points but the Scots fought back to within two at the end of the game. Actually the fourth quarter was nip and tuck all the way to the end. Hoke's record is now 8-1. Lady Eagles Score Wins ^ The Lady Eagles defeated Irwin in Fayetteville January 11 by a score of 30-1 1. The Eagles defense was very suc cessful but the offense was lagging in penetration. The Eagles took a 6-1 lead, a slow beginning for the first quarter. The second quarter was about the same as the Eagles took fc a 10 point lead by halftime. The Eagles played their best in the third quarter outscoring Irwin 13-2. The Eagles were outscored in the fourth 4-9. T. Kelton led the Eagles with 10 points followed by A. Armstrong with 8 points. Jott nson led with 7 points. The Lady Eagles were eager to play before the home crowd taking a 11-0 lead after the first quarter's ^ action. They continued the attack ? with a 23-1 lead at halftime. The Lady Eagles continued their game plan in the second half defeating West Lee 44-3. T. Kelton led the Eagles with 14 points followed by J. Hunt and A. Arm strong with 8 points each. T. Watkins scored 6, R. Day 4, M. Holmes 2 and N. Singletary 2. The Eagles have a 9-0 record for t the season. In the girls' contest, a field goal fired by Beth McRainey with three seconds to go in the overtime period won the battle. Those 2 priceless points constituted McRainey's total score for the game. Hoke's Sabrina Barnes led all in dividual scoring with 23 points. In Friday's contest, Holl ingsworth led all scorers with 21, followed by Scotland's Lee Robin son with 20. Scotland's Shannon Sellers pro vided the winning point with IS seconds left making the first of two free throws good, though missing the second try, and Ritchie Bostic clinched the victory by making a free throw good with two seconds left in the extra session. The opponents went into the overtime after they ended the regulation time in a 63-63 tie.
