"Let's Get Dental" is the theme for the contest. It is being sponsored by the N.C. Dental Society, the Dental Health Section of the State Division of Health Services and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction to make young people aware of the importance of good oral health. According to Dr. Bill Quarles, I Statewide Chairman for 1983 Children's Dental Health Month, school principals have been asked to decide if their schools will par ticipate in the contest. "Awards will be determined based on the number of points a school earns by completing specific activities prepared by the planning committee throughout the month of February," Dr. Quarles said. % "Points will be awarded to the school for such activities as having a dental display in the school library, holding a non-sweet snack day or conducting PTA programs related to dental health." Dr. Quarles said, "classroom teachers can add to their schools' point total by scheduling dental health activities, such as conduc ting a fluoride mouthrinse pro gram or asking a dentist to visit and talk to students, as part of their classroom curriculum." Principals may add points to their schools' overall score by ac tively participating. Superinten dents and administrators can also give a boost to the winning school's score by participating. First prize for the winning school will be a state dental health trophy and cash award of S50Q with district winners receiving a 1100 prize. The cash prizes are be ing offered by the N.C. Dental Society and its local affiliates. Launched "We're asking individual den tists and local dental societies to urge schools in their area to par ticipate and to offer their assistance with contest activities," Dr. Quarles said. "We want our young people to recognize the im portance of good dental health care." Club president, Mrs. Mary Benkosky called the meeting to order and Mrs. Star Sessoms had devotional. Projects for the year were discussed and it was voted to continue the scholarship award to be given annually. Mrs. Lawrence Barnard, Mrs. Mae Heath and Mrs. Daniel Berry were appointed Ways and Means Committee for the year. Mrs. Benkosky presented the program on tips and aids to better home laundrying. After the meeting adjourned the hostess served refreshments and a social hour was enjoyed. Mike Reynolds of Aberdeen had surgery on his knee Thursday of last week and is recuperating at home. Mrs. Earl Hare of Charlotte spent from Thursday until Satur day of last week with her brother, Thomas Mclnnis and other relatives in the area. Joe Hinkle retired postmaster of Welcome, North Carolina died unexpectedly Tuesday January 25th. Mr. Hinkle was married to the former Helen Kellette daughter of Mrs. Lena Koonce Kellette. Funeral service was Thursday January 27th at Bethesda Church in Welcome. Those attending the funeral from the area were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Koonce, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Koonce, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Koonce, Ken Koonce of Raeford, Mrs. Davis K. Parker of Fayetteville, Lacy Koonce of Lumberton, Frank Martin of Wilmington and Debbie Koonce of Durham. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Barnard spent several days last week with Mrs. Wyatte Adams of Winston Salem who has been ill recently but is recuperating at this time. Mrs. Archie Clark was on the sick list last week but is feeling much better at this report. 1 am happy to report that Mrs. A.W. Wood, Sr. was released from the hospital last Saturday and is recuperating at home following surgery at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville week belore last. Mr. and Mrs. Craig Wood and daughter, Debbie of Thomasville visited Mr. Woods mother, Mrs. A.W. Wood, Sr. last week. Marion Wood of Charlotte visited his mother Mrs. A.W. Wood, Sr. last Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Don Wood and sons, Mack and Allen of Dillon, South Carolina and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Monroe and sons, Jason and Bryan of Raeford visited Mrs. A.W. Wood, Sr. Sunday. The Community was saddened by the death of Mr. D.A. "Zan" Gillis of the Galatia Community Sunday night January 30th at his home. Funeral service was Tues day afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Galatia Presbyterian Church of ficiated by Dr. David Sutton, church pastor with interement in the church cemetery. Mr. Gillis is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gillis and son. Will Gillis. He had many friends throughout the area and will be missed very much.
