Statewide Dental Contest
The first statewide dental health
contest with a $500 cash award to
the winning school, will highlight
p North Carolina's 1983 Children's
Dental Health Month in February.
"Let's Get Dental" is the theme
for the contest.
It is being sponsored by the N.C.
Dental Society, the Dental Health
Section of the State Division of
Health Services and the N.C.
Department of Public Instruction
to make young people aware of the
importance of good oral health.
According to Dr. Bill Quarles,
I Statewide Chairman for 1983
Children's Dental Health Month,
school principals have been asked
to decide if their schools will par
ticipate in the contest.
"Awards will be determined
based on the number of points a
school earns by completing specific
activities prepared by the planning
committee throughout the month
of February," Dr. Quarles said.
% "Points will be awarded to the
school for such activities as having
a dental display in the school
library, holding a non-sweet snack
day or conducting PTA programs
related to dental health."
Dr. Quarles said, "classroom
teachers can add to their schools'
point total by scheduling dental
health activities, such as conduc
ting a fluoride mouthrinse pro
gram or asking a dentist to visit
and talk to students, as part of
their classroom curriculum."
Principals may add points to
their schools' overall score by ac
tively participating. Superinten
dents and administrators can also
give a boost to the winning
school's score by participating.
First prize for the winning
school will be a state dental health
trophy and cash award of S50Q
with district winners receiving a
1100 prize. The cash prizes are be
ing offered by the N.C. Dental
Society and its local affiliates.
Launched
"We're asking individual den
tists and local dental societies to
urge schools in their area to par
ticipate and to offer their
assistance with contest activities,"
Dr. Quarles said. "We want our
young people to recognize the im
portance of good dental health
care."
For more information on the
contest and ways that schools and
dental offices can participate, con
tact Kim Woodall at the Hoke
Health Department at 875-3717.
